Job overview
Birmingham Wheelchair Service is part of Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. The service is based out of the West Midlands Rehabilitation Centre, however runs clinics and home visits across the whole of Birmingham. The team is made up of a service manager, administrators, therapy lead, rehabilitation engineers, allied health professionals, assistant practitioners and technicians. Wheelchairs are provided to a range of children and adults ranging from standard wheelchairs to bespoke customised seating in order to improve the patient’s quality of life and independence.
Birmingham Wheelchair Service is looking for a full time substantive band 4 clinical assistant practioner within the service. If you are enthusiastic, passionate and are looking to increase your skills and knowledge of wheelchairs then this role would be ideal for you.
The successful candidate must be highly motivated, with relevant experience of working with people with disabilities meeting the essential criteria as laid out in the job description.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will actively undertake delegated elements of assessment and equipment handover, including making adjustments of wheelchair equipment and accessories, as required, to meet the patients clinical needs.
The post holder will work collaboratively with therapists and multi-disciplinary staff such as Rehabilitation Engineers to ensure the needs of clients is met within the clinical area.
The post holder will deliver training and teaching to ensure safe and effective use of equipment as we all assessing and fitting equipment/accessories and cushions within their scope of practice.
The post holder needs to be able to independently transfer around the city, carrying a variety of equipment safely in order to support the patient in the most appropriate setting.

Essential criteria
- NVQ 3/BTEC or equivalent in health related subject
- English & Maths GCSE C or equivalent
- Computer Literate
Experience
Essential criteria
- Relevant experience of working with people with disabilities.
- Experience of working as part of a team.
- Experience of working with minimal supervision & dealing with any issues that will require exercising judgment.
- Experience of working with disability equipment
Skills/knowledge
Essential criteria
- Awareness of complex disability
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills – face-to-face, on the telephone and via electronic media (e.g. email)
Desirable criteria
- Technical skills relating to wheelchairs
- Experience of providing training in group settings
Personal qualities
Essential criteria
- Ability to prioritise own workload/ manage own time
- Able and willing to move around the city , independently and at short notice
- Ability to carry a variety of equipment between locations safely
- Ability to work in various locations and at various levels according to the needs of the clients.
