Job overview

Band 6 Children’s Speech and Language Therapist Come and join one of our Locality SLT teams in Birmingham : a vibrant multicultural city!

We have confirmed sessions available in the North, North-West and East localities in our Schools team, in both mainstream and specialist settings supporting a range of communication needs.  Sessions in South and Central localities may also become available in the schools team, alongside some Early Years sessions.

We have term time and all year round contracts and offer flexible working patterns.

Main duties of the job

Successful candidates will have opportunity to:

  • Manage your own caseload of Children with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) including assessment, diagnosis and intervention; using an enabling model to support the child to achieve functional outcomes
  • Deliver care, face to face and virtually, across a range of locations including education settings, children's centres, family hubs, health centres and family homes
  •  Clinically supervise NQPs and more junior members of staff
  • Work with children and families at home and in early years, mainstream & specialist settings, supporting children with SLCN and complex needs
  • Work alongside education and local authority and Early Years partners, supporting a graduated approach to helping children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and work in localities developing local networks to build skills in the wider workforce and increase the impact of our interventions.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

·       Undertaking assessment of clients communication and making appropriate clinical decisions with access to senior colleagues as required

·       Structuring clear therapy plans based on best practice

·       Advising and facilitating the decision making process regarding patient/client management by ensuring that effective communication is achieved

·       Using highly developed communication skills to explain complex condition related information from assessment /therapy plan to clients/carers and multidisciplinary team members etc.

·       Working as part of multidisciplinary and multi-agency teams, including educational colleagues, providing early intervention for children and young people.

Qualifications & training

Essential criteria
  • • First degree level qualification
  • • HCPC Licence to practice
  • • Evidence of recent relevant CPD activities in specialist area
  • • Full Membership of Professional body , relevant to service area

Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Significant experience of diagnostic assessment and intervention in a relevant specialist area of service
  • • Significant experience of working as a specialist therapist with children and families in a range of multi-disciplinary and / or multi-agency teams in Local Authority and Health settings
  • Experience of managing a mixed and complex caseload of children and young people with a range of developmental disorders and delays
  • • Experience of managing safeguarding concerns and an understanding of local processes
  • • Experience of delivering support and supervision to colleagues and other professionals

Skills/Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • • Knowledge of the needs of a diverse social and ethnic population and the impact on all aspects of service provision
  • • Competent in supporting the collection and analysis of data, critiquing research to contribute to service development, planning and management
  • • Knowledge of the national and political agenda influencing health services and specific service area
