Job overview

We are seeking a proactive Registered Nurse with strong expertise in all aspects of enteral feeding to join our Birmingham Community Nutrition leadership team. You will use your clinical knowledge, safeguarding awareness, and understanding of enteral feeding products to support safe governance of the enteral feeding service and budget for over a thousand patients across Birmingham. Working closely with neighbourhood teams, you will help facilitate safe discharge, prevent hospital admissions, and enable device changes within patients’ homes.

This new role will be Safeguarding lead for the service and provide supervision and training for the adult nutrition nurse team, coordinating clinical cover and ensuring staff have the skills and equipment needed for effective caseload management.

Main duties of the job

Provide leadership to the nutrition nurse team and the wider trust on enteral feeding equipment, it will monitor and assess new entrants to the market and the cost-effective solutions to nutritional care.

Work on complex clinical cases, leveraging your expert knowledge of Nutrition nursing and safeguarding policy to support vulnerable patients.

Work alongside the service lead to provide a coordinated approach to leadership to ensure consistency and excellence across the service.

The postholder will provide visible clinical and professional leadership for identified pathways and the nurses within the BCHC Nutrition Nursing Service including:

 

      Children and Families

      Learning Disabilities

       ASR

They will also be responsible for line managing the administration staff who support this process.

To work with the Service Clinical Managers (SCMs) to ensure safe and effective clinical delivery of pathways, including triage, MDT/panel discussion and safe discharge from the pathways, providing support to staff with delegated clinical responsibility for any aspects of this.

To lead on clinical change and work with the SCMs and Clinical Nurse Specialists to implement.

       To maintain and build on effective partnership working arrangements within the city, including Neighbourhood teams, Community Care Collaborative staff, Commissioners and external companies, to support and develop integrated service delivery.

        To advise, guide and engage in care planning relevant to nutrition nursing.

       To make a significant overall contribution to service development, ensuring that the service is up to date and fit for purpose, writing and developing processes, standards and policies as necessary.

         To ensure that clinical objectives are set for the pathways, which incorporate the Divisional and Trust objectives, maximise opportunities for integrated working and consider local needs, issues and access.

        To be responsible for standard setting, guidelines and policies, to ensure that they are current and adhere to a high standard, including implementation of NICE guidelines.

Qualifications/ Training

Essential criteria
  • Degree in Nursing and current professional registration
  • Relevant Masters degree or equivalent level of experience of working at a senior level in specialist area.
  • Management or leadership qualification or equivalent level of experience.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development, relevant to nutrition nursing and enteral feeding.
Desirable criteria
  • Nurse prescribing

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Extensive experience of working in the field of Nutrition Nursing and Enteral Feeding.
  • Extensive experience of working as part of a multi-disciplinary team and with other agencies.
  • Significant experience of staff support/management.
  • Experience of coordinating a service and developing policies for the service.
  • Relevant experience of engagement of people who are socially excluded, disabled or disadvantaged.
  • Experience of Safeguarding.
Desirable criteria
  • Significant experience of Enteral Feeding Contracts including liaison with NHS partners and external agencies.

Skills / Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Highly developed knowledge within the field of Nutrition Nursing and Enteral Feeding.
  • Experience of, and the ability to, provide staff with clinical supervision and assessment of clinical practice.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Equality and Diversity issues.
  • Competent in clinical leadership skills and the ability to lead change.
  • Sound understanding of the priorities and financial climate of the NHS.
  • Knowledge of enteral feeding strategies/working policies and guidelines.
  • Good working knowledge of the principles of Clinical Governance, and of risk and performance management.
  • Knowledge of workforce planning, recruitment and retention processes.
  • Problem solving skills.
  • Competent in use of IT systems and processes relevant to the area of work.
