We are delighted to be able to offer a Band 4 Physiotherapy Assistant post within our Children’s Community Physiotherapy service .
The successful applicant will have previous experience of being an Allied Health professional support worker or significant experience of working with children in health/social care or educational settings.
Candidates should be passionate about supporting children with physical and learning needs to reach their therapy goals.
It is a community post, working with a caseload of children and young people from across Birmingham with neurological and developmental conditions. It will involve working within the community environment, working under the guidance of registered Physiotherapists.
Main duties of the job
To assist the BCHC Paediatric Physiotherapy Team in providing a physiotherapy service to children in the community. This may involve visits to homes, nurseries and mainstream/ special schools.
The post holder may work independently without direct supervision at times. However they will be in regular liaison with designated physiotherapists, who will assess all children and delegate to the post-holder accordingly.
The post holder will also be required to undertake regular clerical duties as requested, to help support the needs of the child/young person, using email, Microsoft, intranet systems and databases as appropriate.
The Children’s Physiotherapy Department, works as part of Inclusion Services within the Children and Families Division of Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. We work across the whole city, in a range of community settings, thus requiring successful applicants to demonstrate a high level of flexibility.
Access to reliable transport or means of travel is essential. The applicant will ideally hold a full driving licence and have access to a car. The post-holder may be required to transport items of therapy equipment at times.

To plan and provide care plans to meet prior agreed goals and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions using appropriate outcome measures in line with the therapy outcome measure framework and make any necessary modifications.
The post holder will be required to plan, provide and adapt therapeutic activity as appropriate within the framework set by the physiotherapist and within the post holder’s competencies.
3 To work without direct supervision in the selection, planning, and implementation of treatment activities. i.e. to develop and alter treatment plans according to the child’s needs and rate of progress
4. To prioritise, plan and organise daily workload, ensuring that daily tasks and on-going workloads are prioritised and completed within agreed and acceptable timescales, ensuring that changes are discussed and agreed with the line manager.
5. To teach and advise parents, educational staff and other carers on aspects of handling, positioning and exercise programmes to reinforce the physiotherapy care plan objectives.
6. To carry out group activities, as appropriate, working to physiotherapy care plan/treatment objectives.
7. To carry out appropriate joint visits with other members of the multidisciplinary team e.g. Early Years Support Services, Physical Disabilities Support Services, liaising with the named physiotherapist as appropriate.
8. To run clinics/appointments for a specified group of children with support from a PT as required This will include the administration associated with the organising of the clinic, liaising with other agencies/ professionals as appropriate,
9. To communicate effectively with children, carers and professionals, using a range of communication skills and accessing alternative communication systems where necessary.
1 To alert the appropriate physiotherapist of any changes in a child’s situation/general condition. Assess progress, report findings and make suggestions to the seeking guidance as required.
To be responsible for ordering loan equipment and assist in the ordering of non-standard equipment

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- NVQ Level 3/BTEC in a health, education or social care (or equivalent training)/ Physiotherapy Access course
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of recent study/training in the area of paediatrics.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Significant prior experience as an Allied Health professional support worker or relevant work experience
- Significant experience of applying basic care skills in a community/clinical/ educational setting
- Experience of working independently and managing own time whilst prioritising activities
- Experience of working with a child/children with a disability
- Experience of providing a clerical support service within a team environment
Skills/knowledge
Essential criteria
- Ability to communicate verbally in a manner appropriate to a variety of parties
- Competent in generating written communication which is relevant, concise, accurate and legible
- Ability to work independently as well as within a team
- Ability to organise own workload.
- Knowledge and experience of using IT systems
Personal qualities
Essential criteria
- Able to demonstrate awareness of sensitivity to the needs of individuals from minority groups
- Flexible team player, able to work on own initiative, with the ability to establish good working relationships with colleagues
- Ability to travel independently to various work locations and transport equipment on occasion.
