Birmingham Wheelchair Service is part of the Equipment & Technology Group within Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. Based at the West Midlands Rehabilitation Centre, the service delivers wheelchair clinics and domicilary visits across Birmingham.

The multi-disciplinary team includes Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Rehabilitation Engineers, Technicians, administration and support staff who provide wheelchairs for both children and adults—from standard models to bespoke, custom seating—to enhance independence and quality of life.

The Warehouse & Technical Assistant supports this service by:

  • Ensuring equipment is available, safe, and meets specification.
  • Organising and managing storage areas.
  • Driving service vans to transport equipment.
  • Assisting clinicians with minor wheelchair modifications and accessory fittings.

All work is carried out under the direction of clinicians.

Main duties of the job

Technical Support:

  • Perform minor wheelchair adjustments and fit accessories based on clinical prescriptions.
  • Assist clinicians during patient equipment setup.
  • Report safety issues and maintain accurate intervention records.

Equipment & Stock Management:

  • Handle deliveries, collections, and movements of wheelchairs and accessories.
  • Check incoming goods, maintain stock levels, and ensure proper labeling and storage.
  • Clean, charge, and maintain assessment and service equipment.
  • Liaise with repair contractors, monitor repairs, and update inventory systems.

Driving & Delivery:

  • Drive service vans to deliver and collect equipment between sites and patient locations.
  • Provide basic equipment information to patients during delivery.

Administrative & IT Tasks:

  • Use IT systems (e.g. Rio, BEST, Excel) for stock tracking, documentation, and communication.
  • Ensure equipment records and stock control data are accurate and up to date.

Health & Safety:

  • Maintain a clean and organised store area.
  • Adhere to Trust policies on manual handling, infection control, and security.

Teamwork & Development:

  • Provide cover for colleagues, train new staff, and attend relevant meetings/training.
  • Participate in service improvement and sustainability initiatives.
  • Identify and pursue personal training and development opportunities.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • GCSE or equivalent qualification in Maths and English. NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering Apprenticeship/ Engineering Qualification.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience in a Warehouse/Stores environment/Mechanical Workshop. Experience of stock management.

Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Good communication skills both verbal and written. Competent in Microsoft Office packages. Competent in database input. Competent in Stock Management/System. Stock taking knowledge. Health & Safety knowledge. Infection Control knowledge.

Personal Qualities

Essential criteria
