Pre Operative Assessment Nurse

The Pre-operative department is a busy department providing care for Gynaecology patients awaiting elective surgery in Gynaecology. The role will be for a Nurse in the department to provide care and effectively assess patients requiring surgery and manage patients care requirements. Liaising with the MDT team, Clinicians, and colleagues to ensure the patients receive the best care.

  • To undertake pre-operative assessment of patients requiring elective gynecological surgery including:
  1. Health Assessment
  2. Providing advice & information to patients by explanation of planned procedures to include surgery, admission & nursing care
  3. Phlebotomy
  4. Recording and interpretation of ECG
  5. Review of investigations results and escalating abnormal results
  6. To ensure that all patients receive all information at an appropriate level to enable them to give informed consent.
  7. Refer to anesthetic colleagues as per patient pathway
  • Liaising with admissions and patient regarding arranging surgery date
  • Assisting with development of integrating care pathways for elective patients.
  • Supervision and assistance with professional development of nursing staff working in pre-operative assessment department and new starters.
  • To undertake training and maintain own competence required for the position ensuring all practice is in line with evidence base.
  • To assess the emotional/psychological needs of patients and offer support and counseling as required. Referring to relevant services such as safeguarding for management support of patient
  • Practice in accordance with guidelines and procedures for the department and trust, Ensuring best practice.
  • Plan monitor and evaluate ongoing training and relevant education and development opportunities for a defined nursing team and participate in the teams annual training needs analysis.
