Job overview
The Smokefree Pregnancy Service is focused on promoting smokefree pregnancies across the Birmingham and Solihull ICB/ LMNS to improve the health of women and families who smoke and the outcomes of their pregnancies.
The Tobacco Dependency Advisor (TDA) will work within the community maternity services, in-patient maternity service, providing individualized support to women and will specifically deliver smoking cessation support to women and their families in a flexible and innovative way. Beyond this, the TDA will also engage with the wellbeing of the women they interact with, promoting healthy lifestyles and signposting to other relevant services whilst managing caseloads and clinics offering patient calls with appropriate face to face appointments.
Main duties of the job
The Advisor will receive referrals from team members for smoking cessation support, will advise and will work proactively with all women and their household members who smoke during pregnancy.
The Advisor will provide a variety of evidence-based stop smoking interventions including face-to-face, behavioural support and pharmacotherapy, group sessions, digital and self-help support, use of e-cigarettes and telephone and texting support.
They will work closely with others as part of the wider pathway to support smoking cessation and smoke-free households including carbon monoxide testing; risk perception interventions; recording, collating, and monitor smoking and quit rates with client progress.
The postholder will be working closely with the team leader to implement a range of services across the ICB/LMNS. As a smoke free champion across the Trust, you will provide information, advice, and support to patients on stopping smoking, minimising harm from tobacco and health-related issues in line with best guidance and protocols.
You will be involved in awareness raising sessions in the Trust, reinforcing the training provided to staff to reduce harm from tobacco.

QUALIFICATIONS
Essential criteria
- NVQ Level 3 in Health care or equivalent
- Experience working with and understanding Excel Spreadsheet
- GCSE pass in English Language or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- Smoking Cessation Advisor Intermediate level qualification
- Trained in Making Every Contact Count and Motivational Interviewing
KNOWLEDGE & NATURE OF EXPERIENCE
Essential criteria
- Demonstrate an understanding of health outcomes for smoking and smoking in pregnancy
- Demonstrate a good understanding of national policies relating to smokefree pregnancies (including SBLCBv3.2, Long-term Plan/ Tobacco Control Plan)
- Has Healthy lifestyle/behavioral change experience
- Has auditing skills.
- Has good understanding and has worked with Excel/ and management of data
Desirable criteria
- Experience of providing smoking cessation support
- Smoking cessation trained (e.g. through the National Centre for Smoking Cessation and Training)
PROFESSIONAL / MANAGERIAL / SPECIALIST KNOWLEDGE
Essential criteria
- Has excellent and accurate data entry skills
Desirable criteria
- Has experience of BadgerNet (patient clinical system) or patient records management systems
PERSONAL SKILLS / ABILITIES AND ATTRIBUTES

- Has motivational qualities
- Has understanding and experience of caseload management
- Has knowledge of public health and maternity services to enable effective referrals and signposting.
- Excellent communication skills are a crucial element of the role. Must be able to communicate effectively with service users, colleagues, and management.
