An exciting opportunity has arisen at Birmingham Children’s Hospital for an enthusiastic, highly driven Teaching Fellow who has completed at least their foundation years of training and has gained paediatric experience. The post is for a period of one year and will provide the successful applicant with the necessary skills required to become a confident and competent teacher as well as gaining experience in paediatrics. 

You would work closely with the Undergraduate Medical Education Team to provide a high-quality educational experience for medical students and physician associate students from both The University of Birmingham and Aston University. There are no clinical components to this post.

 

The post is not recognised for training but interested applicants can apply for an Out of Programme Experience with their Specialty School. The educational experience gained from this post will enhance future career progression, including GRID and SPIN applications.

 

The post is suitable for those with paediatric experience who have completed at least their foundation years of training.

 

The successful applicant will receive training in simulation. There may also be an opportunity for the post holder to be supported to undertake a funded PGCert in Medical Education should your appraisal or ARCP have identified this as a development area.

The successful applicants will be based at Birmingham Children’s Hospital within the Undergraduate Medical Education Department. They will deliver paediatric and child health medical education to medical students and physician associate students from The University of Birmingham and Aston University. 

The post holder will play a key part in the design, development, and delivery of a range of undergraduate medical education activities including bedside teaching, clinical skills teaching, and facilitation of workshops, communication skills training, lectures, group-based teaching sessions and simulation training using both high fidelity and low fidelity.

The successful applicant will join a team of committed clinical teachers and tutors to contribute to the design, development, delivery, and assessment of paediatric and child health undergraduate medical education in the trust.

 

The appointee will:

 

TEACHING:

·       Deliver daily clinical teaching to medical students and physician associate students.

·       Deliver teaching to medical students and physician associate students during their paediatric academic program.

·       Contribute to the development of clinical skills teaching, especially in the assessment and management of acutely ill children and young people.

·       Contribute to the organisation of undergraduate examinations with the UGME team.

·       Develop, undertake, and evaluate a project in an area of paediatric medical education.

·       Develop their simulation teaching skills, in both low and high fidelity.

·       Attend UGME educational and academic meetings.

·       Deliver clinical and quality targets agreed both internally and with the Universities.

 

CLINICAL:

·       This is a non-clinical role.

 

PROFESSIONAL:

·       Work with local managers and professional colleagues in the employing Trust to contribute to the efficient running of the undergraduate medical education service.

·       Be subject to the provisions of the Terms and Conditions of Service, be required to observe the Trust’s agreed policies and procedures, drawn up in consultation with the profession on clinical matters and to follow the local and national employment and personnel policies and procedures.

·       Participate in the Continuous Professional Development and the Trust’s appraisal scheme.

·       Be aware of the responsibility of all employees to maintain a safe and healthy environment for patients, visitors and staff and attend all relevant health and safety training.

·       Ensure that all Trust-wide standards are maintained to improve the quality of total care to all who encounter services provided by Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Trust.

  • Full Registration and a licence to practise with the General Medical Council (GMC)

Knowledge
