We are seeking to appoint two enthusiastic and highly motivated Clinical Teaching Fellows in Paediatric Emergency Medicine to join our Undergraduate Medical Education Team.
This is a fixed-term post for one year, with an anticipated start date of August or September 2026. The role offers you the opportunity to develop as confident and competent medical educator while gaining valuable experience in paediatric emergency medicine within a tertiary children’s hospital.
Main duties of the job
In this role, you will be based at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, working across the Emergency Department and the Undergraduate Medical Education Department. Post holders will deliver paediatric and child health education to medical students and physician associate students from the University of Birmingham and Aston University, contributing to teaching within both the academic programme and the Paediatric Emergency Department. The role includes a combination of clinical and non-clinical teaching responsibilities.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
You will join a team of committed clinical teachers and tutors and contribute to the design, development, delivery, and assessment of undergraduate education in paediatrics and child health within the Trust.
You will be expected to undertake the following responsibilities:
Teaching Responsibilities
- Deliver regular clinical teaching to medical students and physician associate students using a service-based learning and modern clinical apprenticeship model
- Contribute to teaching during paediatric academic programmes for medical and physician associate students
- Participate in the delivery of structured teaching, including simulation-based education, clinical skills teaching, and induction programmes
- Support the organisation and delivery of undergraduate examinations in collaboration with the Undergraduate Medical Education (UGME) team
- Design, undertake, and evaluate a project within an area of paediatric medical education
- Attend UGME educational and academic meetings, as agreed with the Head and/or Deputy Head of Academy
- Deliver agreed educational and quality targets, in line with internal objectives and university requirements
- Be accountable for the delivery and quality of teaching to the Head of Academy
Clinical Responsibilities
- In addition to educational duties, contribute to the clinical management of patients within the Paediatric Emergency Department
- Provide expert clinical opinion across a broad range of emergency and elective paediatric presentations
- Take full and independent responsibility for clinical assessment, investigation, management, and ongoing care of patients, appropriate to level of experience
- Demonstrate safe, effective decision-making within a busy tertiary paediatric emergency department, with appropriate escalation and multidisciplinary team working

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- MBChB, MBBS, or an equivalent medical qualification
- Full registration with, and a licence to practice from, the General Medical Council (GMC)
- Advanced Life Support qualification relevant to the specialty (e.g. APLS, EPALS, or ETC)
- Level 3 safeguarding training
Desirable criteria
- A formal teaching or education qualification (e.g. PGCert in Medical Education)
- Membership examination with the relevant UK Royal College (e.g. MRCPCH/MRCEM)
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- By the time of appointment, completion of at least four years of full-time postgraduate training (or equivalent experience gained on a part-time basis), with demonstrable equivalent experience and competencies
- Of the four years’ postgraduate training, at least two years must include experience in Paediatrics or Emergency Medicine (excluding Foundation Programme rotations). Equivalent overseas paediatric experience will be accepted
- A minimum of 12 months’ prior experience working within the NHS in the relevant specialty
- Experience in teaching undergraduate and/or postgraduate learners
- Experience in audit management and conducting clinical audits, with the ability to use evidence to support decision-making
- In-depth knowledge of the UK undergraduate medical curriculum
Desirable criteria
- Experience in mentoring or providing wellbeing support to junior staff or students in a formally recognised role
- Publications in relevant peer-reviewed journals within the last five years
- Completion of a recognised leadership course or training programme
- Involvement as faculty on a simulation-based course
