Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dedicated transition improvement nurse to join a busy and dynamic specialist nursing team within the Midlands regional Stem Cell Transplant service. The post will be based onsite at Birmingham Children’s Hospital. The post holder will be required to manage their time allowing collaborative work to improve patient pathways within the SCT service.

Main duties of the job

  • To lead and coordinate a specialised service for children and young people up to 19 years requiring allograft and autograft stem cell transplantation 
  • To co-ordinate a specialised service for children and young people up to 19 years requiring apheresis service procedures 
  • To lead participate and contribute to the preparation and on-going accreditation of the service for JACIE accreditation and HTA approval for nursing

·         To support the Lead Nurse for haematology & oncology and SCT inpatient ward sister to ensure that there is a robust system for monitoring and maintaining excellent clinical standards, working with ward managers to develop care pathways which optimise lengths of stay and improve the patient experience      

·         To provide nursing leadership to the Stem cell Transplantation Outpatient nursing service 

  • To lead and advise in the future development of the stem cell transplant service with the rest of the clinical team. 
  • To lead in the future development of the gene therapy service for HBO patients
  • To participate in the education of nurses within BWC and POSCU’s who have contact with children and young people undergoing a stem cell transplant. 
  • To support the lead nurse and ward sisters with the operational management of the service (including bed management, attending haematology/oncology speciality meetings and senior nurse meetings within the specialised medicine directorate)

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • What is the essential qualification for entry into this role and at what level? RSCN/RNC
  • Current NMC registration
  • Mentor and assessor course or equivalent
  • Chemotherapy assessed (or willing to undertake within the first 6 months of being in post)
  • Degree level education
  • Relevant SCT course or HDU course
Desirable criteria
  • Child and Young person cancer care course or ENB 240 or 237 equivalent
  • Advanced Communication course

KNOWLEDGE & NATURE OF EXPERIENCE

Essential criteria
  • Experience in paediatric haematology/ oncology
  • Extensive experience in paediatric stem cell transplant nursing
  • Willingness to undertake training in photopheresis and apheresis procedures
  • Awareness of JACIE standards and other relevant national guidelines
  • Experience in administrating Stem cells
  • Experience in photopheresis
  • Experience in apheresis
Desirable criteria
  • Awareness of current research and ability to apply this to clinical practice
  • Experience in extracorporeal procedures

ANALYTICAL AND JUDGEMENT SKILLS

Essential criteria
  • Analytical & Judgement skills: Experience in writing protocols, guidelines, policies and SOP’s

PROFESSIONAL / MANAGERIAL / SPECIALIST KNOWLEDGE

Essential criteria
  • Good computer skills using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook and Power Point) and IT systems such as Vesper, ESR, Ormis, Lorenzo, E-Roster, Oracle etc.
