We are looking to recruit an experienced and enthusiastic pharmacy technician to join our well respected and dynamic  Pharmacy Team providing high quality pharmaceutical care to our patients with a specific focus on improving antimicrobial stewardship practice across the Trust.

This is a newly funded post to embed and disseminate good antimicrobial stewardship across ROH.

You will be an integral part in the wider pharmacy team and work closely with the lead antimicrobial pharmacist. The successful post holder will also be involved in the implementation, monitoring and reporting of national antimicrobial stewardship priorities.

Main duties of the job

  • You will work closely with medical, nursing and pharmacy staff to ensure the safe and efficient use of antimicrobial medicines.
  • To support the antimicrobial lead pharmacist
  • Assist in the monitoring of antimicrobial consumption, expenditure and ensuring formulary compliance.
  • Partake in trust wide audits and ability to develop analysis and reports and present to relevant areas.
  • Work closely with the antimicrobial team on local and national priorities and promoting antimicrobial stewardship. This includes participation with trust registered CQUINs.
  • Participate in CQUIN data collection and produce quarterly reports on CQUIN compliance.
  • To attend and be an active member of the Trust's Antimicrobial Stewardship Group.
  • Active involvement in the development and review of policies and procedures relating to antimicrobial stewardship and prescribing.
  • To be involved with cascading of communications relating to antimicrobial stewardship.
  • Active involvement in the organization of World Antimicrobial Awareness Week and European Antibiotic Awareness Day activities.
  • Input guidelines and maintain antimicrobial stewardship database of the antimicrobial phone App once this is launched across the trust.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This is not an exhaustive list of duties and a regular review will take place with the postholder as part of their ongoing development and performance management.

  1. To be competent in the dispensing of all prescription types, orders including controlled drugs.
  2. To work autonomously in the final accuracy check of medication or be willing to work towards the Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician (ACPT) qualification.
  3. To accurately order clinically checked medicines for ward administration.
  4. To identify and escalate any issues regarding medication storage, patient own medication, supplies, or drug chart discrepancies to the ward pharmacist
  5. To participate in the development of the ward service and ward initiatives such as ward based prescribing
  6. To offer support to the Lead medicines management pharmacist/ Lead Technician when needed.
  7. To participate in the dispensing of controlled drugs and the maintenance of their stock levels and records.
  8. To ensure medicines are stored and locked away as per Trust policy on the ward
  9. To follow trust policies regarding reporting and monitoring of fridge temperatures and deviations.
  10. To audit and support the safe and secure handling of medicines and controlled drugs at ward level, preparing and managing action plans and report finding.
  11. To lead on ward audits such as missed dose and medicines reconciliation audits.
  12. To counsel patients and carers on their medication during their in-patient stay and on discharge.
  13. To return, assess and credit drugs from wards that are no longer required following Pharmacy returns policy.
  14. To support in investigating incidents related to medicines management across the Trust and to appropriately respond to any complaints
  15. To assess drug charts and record messages on the trust prescribing system (PICS).
  16. Investigate stock discrepancies within department including controlled drugs as per Trust policy
  17.  To undertake and support the lead technician in all general duties of the dispensary and deputise when required.
  18. To ensure that disposal of pharmaceuticals including controlled drugs is in accordance with regulations.
  19. To participate in ‘Recall Procedure’ and follow SOPs.
  20. To supervise and mentor other Assistant Technical Officers (ATOs), students, technicians, and new members of staff.

  • To contribute to the training and education of pharmacy and ward staff.
  • To achieve objectives agreed at individual Performance Review with the line manager.
  • To participate in working late nights, weekends, and bank holidays, in line with service commitments.
  • To demonstrate an ongoing commitment to continuing professional development (CPD).
  • To work efficiently and safely both on wards and in the department always adhering accurately to Standard Operating Procedures and policies underpinned by Trust Values.
  • To undertake any other duties that may reasonably be required as agreed by senior staff.
  • To assist in the reduction of medicines errors and to be pro-active at reporting via governance systems.
  • To follow pharmacy SOPs in place for the delivery of service on the wards.
  • To support in developing and amending standard operating procedures.
  • To attend meetings with a variety of health care professionals, drug companies and hospital staff to participate in the initiation of new systems.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
  • Completed accuracy checking technician course
  • Completed or willing to complete a level 4 training pharmacy technician course
Desirable criteria
  • Formal training in antimicrobials
  • Training in managing conflict

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant post qualification experience in medicines management
  • Supervisory experience of junior staff
  • Computer literate
  • Pharmacy technical knowledge and experience, including Law & Ethics and Pharmacy practice.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working within infection prevention teams

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of medicines, side effects and where to find further information
  • Demonstrate antimicrobial experience relevant to the post
  • Experience of planning and undertaking audits
  • Evidence of communication with a broad spectrum of people
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working as part of a MDT
  • Evidence of leadership skills
