Job overview

The post holder is responsible for delivering a high standard of specialist nursing care within the specialist breast service and will support the CNS (Clinical Nurse Specialist) in ensuring high standards of nursing care are provided to all patients receiving care in the specialty. The post holder will be both unit and clinic based. 

The post holder will support the CNS in providing professional advice to members of the multi-disciplinary team; assist in developing the skills and knowledge of staff to deliver high quality care and achieve the performance targets for the specialty. 

Main duties of the job

To be unit and department based and work with staff, acting as a role model, providing clinical care and liaising with the CNS and Lead nurse regularly to ensure seamless care. 

Manage a patient case load in the unit and OPD. 

To attend independent nurse led pre-operative assessment clinics and obtain consent from patients undergoing breast surgery under the jurisdiction of the CNS and agreed competency, breast guidelines and criteria. This would include offering expert advice and literature regarding breast reconstruction and referral to the plastic surgeons as appropriate. 

Actively participate in the MDT Discharge Programme and discharge patients in accordance with the agreed criteria / measurements / assessments.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • RN or relevant part of NMC register (RSCN, RMN) with minimum of 5 years’ experience post registration
Desirable criteria
  • Health Assessment of the Adult Degree level study
  • Recognised accredited course in breast care
  • Recognised training re Lymphoedema care
  • Recognised oncology course
  • Educated to 1st degree or agreement to complete within 3 years of appointment
  • Recognised teaching / assessing / monitoring course

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Completion of medical tattooing competency, or willingness to complete on appointment
  • Knowledge of current clinical developments and professional issues affecting nursing/midwifery
  • Skilled practitioner
  • Understanding of DGOH agendas, and other developments
  • Committed to personal self-development
  • Aware of clinical standards of National Service Frameworks
  • Knowledge of involving patients in service development
  • Knowledge of the relevance of governance and risk management within clinical practice
  • IT user skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office Systems
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of audit/research methodologies

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of professional development and regular study since qualification.
  • A minimum of 6 months recent experience within a Breast Care Setting.
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of prosthetic fitting competence
  • Evidence of knowledge of lymphoedema and treatment.
  • Advanced communication skills
  • Experience of breaking bad news and counselling patients accordingly.
  • Evidence of ability to teach & assess
  • Evidence of prosthetic fitting competence
  • Evidence of knowledge of lymphoedema and treatment.

Communication

  • Experience of team working
  • Able to act as patient advocate
  • Able to liaise with members of the multidisciplinary team
