Job overview

The Hepatology Specialist Support worker is a dynamic and multifaceted role that supports the clinical and administrative functions within the Hepatology Team, and more specifically the Cancer Surveillance programme.  The successful candidate will play a vital role in coordinating patient care, managing data and reporting of statistics, , performing general administrative duties, as well as general clinical work such as phlebotomy, patient education and fibroscan operation. This position requires an individual keen to blend the clinical and administrative work, working within a team of specialist nurses. 

Main duties of the job

  • General administration
  • Collation and reporting of data
  • Database management 
  • Attending meetings within the network
  • Present patient education, face to face or over the phone
  • Operate fibroscan machinary and assist with clinics
  • Phlebotomy

Person specification

Qualifications & Education

Essential criteria
  • GCSE or equivalent to Level 2 Functional Skills Maths & English
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Programmes including; Outlook, Word & Excel
Desirable criteria
  • NVQ 3 in Health and Social Care / NVQ 3 in Business Administration or equivalent
  • RSA / OCR III in typewriting / word processing or equivalent

Knowledge and Training

Essential criteria
  • Previous experience of working in an NHS/Healthcare clinical setting
  • Experience of inputting and interpreting Data and use of systems such as excel.
  • Experience of working with patients and Carers demonstrating excellent communication skills.
  • Demonstrates an excellent understanding of Patient confidentiality
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of cancer provision within the NHS
  • Experience of multi-professional working
  • Experience of coordinating patient pathways
  • Knowledge of medical terminology

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Ability to take responsibility for own Workload, demonstrating the ability to problem solve. Workload and time organisation skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff at all levels.
  • Keyboard and IT skills
Desirable criteria
  • Practical problem solving skills.
  • Fibroscan operation
  • Phlebotomy

  • Good communication skills – able to communicate with wider multidisciplinary team

Essential criteria
  • Willing to undertake training to meet the requirements of the role in an ever changing NHS

  • Ability to use own initiative demonstrating the ability to be flexible and adapt.
  • Ability to prioritise workload and meet deadlines
  • Ability to remain calm in a busy environment whilst working under pressure
  • Working within set scopes of practice to ensure seamless delivery of care.

Physical Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to operate defined machinery used within the department such as the fibroscan machine with training. This can include lifting of this portable item.
  • Ability to perform venepuncture with trust guided training.
  • Ability to work for prolonged periods of time on the computer.
