Job overview

The Clinical Educator plays a key role in developing and delivering high-quality education within the Neonatal Unit. Working closely with senior nursing and education leads, the post holder supports the design and implementation of training aligned with Trust and network objectives. This includes identifying learning needs, supporting workforce development, and ensuring staff have the skills and knowledge to deliver safe, effective, evidence-based care.

The role promotes a culture of continuous learning and improvement, ensuring education responds to clinical priorities and service needs. Around 50% of the role focuses on Family Integrated Care (FiCare), supporting staff to apply its four pillars in practice and deliver holistic, family-centred care. This includes providing clinical support, contributing to audit and quality monitoring, and helping address gaps in practice.

The Clinical Educator works collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams, promoting consistency, sharing expertise, and acting as a role model for professional practice. They use a range of teaching methods, including simulation, digital learning, and bedside teaching, to create an engaging learning environment.

The role also supports competency assessment, clinical governance, and patient safety, ensuring training reflects current standards. Strong communication skills are essential to engage a diverse workforce and support development.

Main duties of the job

The post holder is responsible for the provision and delivery of education, training, and assessment for all medical students and medical trainees within the clinical areas.

The post holder is required to be a highly skilled and competent Registered Health/Allied Health Care Professional in clinical procedures and associated governance.

The post holder will have responsibility for providing clinical skills training to a range of students and trainees including Medical Students, Physician Associate students, Medical trainees, Postgraduate Nurses and Allied Health Care Professionals.

Education and qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Register Nurse or Allied Health Professional registered with HCPC (or equivalent) qualification.
  • Evidence of post graduate study in neonatal QIS
  • Evidence of Leadership & Management
Desirable criteria
  • Teaching/Assessing qualification

Skills & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Relevant wide range of clinical experience within the clinical environment encompassing current clinical skill/ procedure.
  • Practicing, with up to date documented competencies of a wide range of clinical skills procedures including Cannulation, venepuncture, IVs, urinary catheterisation, ECG.
  • Experience of teaching in both formal and informal settings.
  • Good medical/clinical knowledge
  • Understanding of clinical governance and risk management.
  • Evidence of Clinical practice development.
  • Evidence of supporting, being a role model and making positive change/decisions
  • Evidence of understanding importance of BFI/Ficare
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in developing and supporting self and others practice
  • Report writing skills
  • Aware/understanding of current clinical research
  • Excellent IT skills
  • Data collection and statistical analysis skills
  • Evidence of planning, implementing and evaluating education programmes
