Job overview

To provide leadership to the Intrapartum Care Team of Midwives and Support Teams, and to provide midwifery care within a hospital setting.  The post holder will be responsible for the implementation and delivery of evidence-based care within the team ensuring local women and their families have both excellent outcomes and experiences.   The post holder will be responsible for ensuring a clean and suitable environment to ensure a positive birth experience.

Main duties of the job

The Labour Ward Coordinator will primarily work clinically on Delivery Suite and Triage. As a clinical leader and role model you will provide high quality and safe woman-centred, evidence-based care. You will be experienced in advocacy for women, safe care provision within a high-risk birthing environment and be able to support and lead the Intrapartum Care team. 

You will manage your own time and department effectively and efficiently. You will have the responsibility of ensuring that the team provide a safe service with appropriate management of people, resources, finances and estate.    

Collaborative and cohesive working with the Ward Manager, Operational management team, Matrons, Consultant Midwife and medical colleagues is a key requirement. You will have the skills and experience to support the rest of the unit when required to ensure a co-ordinated approach to the service for women and their families.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Midwife
  • Honours level Degree in Midwifery or evidence of this level of study
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of management experience and/or training
  • Masters degree or evidence of master’s level education or equivalent
  • Mentorship qualification
  • Professional Midwifery Advocate

Knowledge & Nature of Experience

Essential criteria
  • Current and extensive experience in midwifery practice
  • Sound clinical midwife led care leadership
  • Knowledge of public health issues and national initiatives relating to health care
  • Knowledge of current issues in antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care
Desirable criteria
  • Effective service management experience
  • Risk Management experience

Analytical and Judgement Skills

Essential criteria
  • Innovative approach to midwifery skills
  • Evidence of participation in evidence-based care and research activities
  • Ability to evaluate and audit midwifery care
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to review Incidents and investigate under the Datix system

Professional/Managerial/Specialist Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Relevant knowledge regarding physiological birth
  • Ability to produce reports and data at short notice
  • Evidence advanced of oral and written communication skills, which may include delivery of bad news in very challenging circumstances, where there are barriers to communication
  • Able to prioritise and meet deadlines
  • Able to manage sensitive or difficult situations effectively
  • IT skills including Microsoft Office, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Evidence of leading and participating in change management
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to design rosters to ensure that safe staffing is optimised
  • Investigation of PALS & Complaints in a timely manner
