Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 5 Staff Nurse based in our General Ophthalmology Out Patient Department at Walsall Manor Hospital.
Joining our exceptional, committed, caring and compassionate team will allow you to provide high quality, efficient care to all patients in both a clinic and surgical role.
Previous experience is desirable, but not necessary, as you will receive full support from our Ophthalmic Practice Education Facilitator and the Ophthalmic MDT team. The role requires completion of our education and development program delivered through an in-house study course.
This will allow you to enhance the care you provide for your patients and ensure the Ophthalmic service is fully maintained within this fascinating specialty within the healthcare sector.
The Trust has a 12-month Preceptorship programme for newly qualified and local development programmes for experienced staff which will provide you with support and guidance, regular staff engagement, feedback sessions and a supportive team ethos.
Main duties of the job
Working within a small team of nurses, the department offers a wide range of Ophthalmology services providing high quality support for various outpatient activity, including - general ophthalmology clinics, minor procedures, Botox clinics, laser clinics and OCT service provision.
The exciting element to the role is the fact that the team also cover the pre- and post-op cataract surgery unit. This involves admitting patients for surgery, advising of aftercare and discharging them home. This opens up the avenue of surgical care along with clinical care.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Supporting the team within the Ophthalmology Outpatient Department by:
Performing Snellon Visual Acuity tests on patients.
Assessing patients’ notes and recognising how to prepare the patient for the clinicians.
Instilling eye drops as per PGD guidelines.
Supporting laser clinics.
Supporting Botox clinics.
Supporting in minor ops clinics.
Obtaining OCT images from patients.
Admitting patients and preparing them for cataract surgery.
Receiving patients back from cataract surgery.
Provide advice to patients, informing them of aftercare following cataract surgery, and discharging them home.
Ordering and preparing notes for cataract surgery patients.
To order and obtain results of investigations and tests on the trust I.T. systems.
