Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust provides integrated acute and community Healthcare in the West Midlands serving a population of 260,000 residents. Walsall Manor Hospital houses the full range of district general hospital services. The £170 million development was completed in 2010 and we are continually upgrading. Construction of the new integrated critical care unit was completed in 2018, extension of a Neonatal Unit and an approved plan to build a brand new, state of the art Emergency Department which commenced in 2021

Job overview

This is a Specialist Grade in Cardiology position for 10 Programmed Activities per week with an additional PA available subject to negotiation. The post will include participation in a 1:7 Cardiology “hot 1-week on-call” at consultant level. 

Teaching and participation in audit and research interest are encouraged. The Cardiology service is provided from Ward 7 where the Coronary Care Unit is situated and the Cardiac Unit which houses the Cardiac Catheter Laboratory, pacing room, recovery area and clinic assessment room. Cardiac Catheterisation sessions are shared between the participating Consultants and Specialist Grade. There are 7.5 clinically based programmed activities and 2.5 supporting programmed activities.

The post holder will join an existing team of 6 dynamic cardiologists and to undertake OPD and IP activities at Walsall Manor Hospital NHS Trust and given the skill sets, may participate in the development of services within the CCG and the Black Country Alliance in HF. The consultants have interest in imaging, PCI, HF Complex devices, and EP. The Cardiology department have a robust programme for mentoring the new Speciality Doctors appointment: the successful candidate will have a clear designated supervisor within the departments and appraisal annually with set PDPs.

Main duties of the job

1.    To be responsible for ensuring a commitment in providing a high-quality cardiology service to patients by continual development of practice in the light of research evidence and by audit against Clinical standards.

2.    To provide advice to primary and secondary care colleagues in other specialties in relation to cardiac problems and oversee the internal referrals assessed by junior and specialist cardiac team.

3.    To provide a comprehensive outpatient service from clinics provided in both the main Outpatient Department and specialist clinics held within the Clinical Measurement Unit.

4.    To support teaching and training of junior medical staff, medical students Postgraduate Medical Education in general. The Trust will strongly Support and allow time for CPD for the Successful candidate.

5.    To support and encourage audit and research and develop close links with academic initiatives.

6.    To actively participate in CME and personal development programmes.

7.    To support the on-going development of services for cardiology in line with the existing programmes and have an interest in community cardiology. To support the community heart failure virtual ward.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Basic Medical Degree (e.g MBBS)
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • Full GMC registration. Licensed and licensable to practice.
  • An appropriate higher Cardiology qualification
  • Current ALS qualification i.e within the last 3 years or requirement to obtain within 3 months of appointment.
  • MD/PHD

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of individual learning, plan and provide teaching, training, and supporting educational needs of individuals, multidisciplinary and interprofessional learning
  • Ability to provide clinical supervision and leadership and understand how to raise concerns about behaviours or performance of learners.
  • Evidence of published work and/or research experience.
  • Ability to undertake echocardiography.
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the care of patients.
  • Completed a minimum of 12 years’ medical work
  • Experience of conducting clinical audit
