Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust provides integrated acute and community Healthcare in the West Midlands serving a population of 260,000 residents. Walsall Manor Hospital houses the full range of district general hospital services. The £170 million development was completed in 2010 and we are continually upgrading. Construction of the new integrated critical care unit was completed in 2018, extension of a Neonatal Unit and an approved plan to build a brand new, state of the art Emergency Department which commenced in 2021

Lead Nurse Emergency Department
We are seeking to recruit a Lead Nurse in Walsall Healthcare’s Emergency Department. The post holder will provide effective leadership and expert nursing support to the day to day management of the Department including the organisation of the department activities and the management of staff and resources.
Main duties of the job
The applicant will have the opportunity to work within this team to provide solutions to new innovative ways of working.
As an Emergency Department we are committed to provide high quality care within a demanding service by ensuring our nursing team are proactive and have additional clinical skills to provide individualised patient care for the whole range of presenting conditions.
You must demonstrate excellent communicate skills, initiative, drive and have the ability to lead a Nurse Team in a busy Emergency Department environment.
Our Department has support of an ED Professional Development Nurse and access to a broad learning environment including courses to increase clinical skills and knowledge this includes ILS/PILS/ TILS/ALS/EPLS /TNCC and in house plaster application course depending on experience. We can offer post registration courses via Wolverhampton University in Emergency care of the child and mentorship. We positively encourage department link nurses and are developing a wide range of departmental champions to promote specialist support within the team.
Working for our organisation
We are an integrated organisation providing both community and hospital services within the local health economy with a combined total income of just over £220 million. The Trust directly employs more than 4,000 staff making it one of the largest employers in Walsall.
The hospital site was substantially redeveloped between 2007 and 2010 and has 464 general and acute beds. It also comprises of outpatient, diagnostic and treatment is linked to the new build which proposes to extend our medical staffing numbers.
Following our CQC inspection in 2019 we are rated good with features of outstanding practice. This is the result of excellent team work and dedication of every single member of the ED team.
We are in the final stages of our brand new £36 million development of a new Emergency Department and acute medical unit. We have pushed boundaries and developed a modern-day department, fit to provide excellent standards of emergency care.
Walsall receives 85,000 adult and paediatric patients per year, rising to around 105,000 in 2020. We have a good intake of trauma as a Trauma Unit and complex medical demands. We have an excellent provision of surgical, medical and intensive care facilities and can provide emergency clinic follow ups. Our haematology, biochemistry and radiology departments are supportive of the Emergency Department and our alternative pathways both in hospital and in the community are extensive and exemplary.

The post holder will support the Matron in developing and monitoring services and the quality of care experienced by patients. This is a wonderful opportunity for those with previous experience in ED in a Senior or Leadership role or are willing to expand their portfolio.

- First level registration.
- Evidence of undertaking a recognised course of study in teaching and assessing.
- Educated to diploma level or can demonstrate experience of operating at this level.
- Evidence of professional development and regular study since qualification.
- Educated to 1st degree level or evidence of study at degree level.
Experience

- Proven nursing / midwifery experience since qualification.
- Evidence of substantial Emergency Department experience.
- Experience of regularly managing a team of staff and other resources in the acute setting.
- Experience of close liaison with members of multidisciplinary team.
