Walsall Manor Hospital houses the full range of district general hospital services. The £170 million development was completed in 2010 and we are continually upgrading. Construction of the new integrated critical care unit was completed in 2018, extension of a Neonatal Unit and an approved plan to build a brand new, state of the art Emergency Department which commenced in 2021

Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to expand our existing team of  Respiratory  nurses. We are seeking to recruit 2 Band 7 Asthma Specialist nurses to join our expanding team. Walsall NHS Trust is now a Tier 3 Asthma Centre working as a spoke of the Regional Severe Asthma Centre (RSAC) at the Birmingham Heartlands Hospital. This means monthly   participating in Regional Asthma MDT and presenting patients for initiation of biological agents. The post holder will be actively involved in the selection process, presenting at RSAC as well as initiating biological agents working closely with Respiratory Consultants and our blu-teq Pharmacists. 

The successful candidate will autonomously work as a clinical lea providing systematic assessment of patients and where able avoid hospital admission or enabling early discharges. The post holder is expected to carry out nurse led clinics, liaising with community team in providing high quality safe care to all out-patients. Working in line with NHS England Severe Asthma Service Specifications. Participating in National Asthma and COPD Audit.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for the effective clinical leadership of the asthma/difficult Asthma Service. Working within the Respiratory service, the post holder will work as part of the Respiratory team in delivering an effective --   Asthma service and supporting long term respiratory care.

-Review patients with severe asthma and associated conditions in nurse-led asthma clinics including new referrals to the asthma service, post-hospital discharges and patients requiring close follow-up. 

-For patients hospitalised with asthma exacerbations this includes the delivery of admission and discharge care bundles in line with the requirements of the National Asthma and COPD Audit Programme (NACAP) incorporating elements of education, self-management planning and inhaler technique.

The post holder will be working across a variety of hospital settings including outpatient nurse led Asthma clinics, administration of biologics for the severe asthma patients and ward areas delivering patient care and education and clinical support of staff. 

The post holder will also need to be able to work closely and collaborate with  Community Respiratory Nurses as well taking referrals from our Urgent Care Centre and Acute Medical Unit.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To work within an extended and expanding role, providing holistic, individualised approach for assessment, diagnosis, planning and implementation, practicing within agreed guidelines and protocols to deliver high quality patient services.
  • Initiate and develop nurse led services within defined protocols, working closely with primary care and ensuring that high standards of nursing care are set and maintained within the respiratory service, monitoring through audit, feedback and review.
  • Professionally run and coordinate a nurse led Asthma clinic providing expert advice and develop individualized treatment plans where prescribing is appropriately tailored to an accurate respiratory diagnosis.
  • Within the field of expertise, and organisational policy, request specific clinical tests to establish a diagnosis.
  • Coordinate the severe asthma biologic clinic and attend the joint severe asthma clinic with the Respiratory Asthma lead. Linking up with ED to monitor and review frequent attendees and providing outpatient reviews for all ED attendees and hospital inpatients at 4 weeks as per the guidelines.
  • Assist hospital staff in the provision of oxygen prescriptions by patient assessment and work closely with the local HosAR to ensure adherence to national best practice standards and protocols.
  • To conduct an outpatient clinic for patients with Bronchiectasis and provide education and care liaising with physiotherapists in primary and secondary care and providing sputum monitoring in line with evidenced based standards and national guidelines.
  • Continue to provide the best evidenced based care for patients with Asthma and liaise with other tertiary sites and primary care to develop local services and optimum care in hospital and the community.
  • To provide quality care to patients with Severe Asthma whilst in hospital and continue the excellent links between secondary and primary care together providing a seamless journey within the Walsall respiratory service. Participating in the acute respiratory virtual ward MDT each morning with members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • To comply with the NACAP requirements by the means of audit of Asthma & COPD admissions. To tailor care as per recognised evidence-based recommendations. To work towards KPI achievement in national benchmarking.

Leadership and Staff Management Responsibilities.

  • Practice as a professional nurse with confidence, authority and expertise, and promote professionalism within the respiratory nursing team. To have advanced leadership skills.
  • Undertakes staff appraisals yearly and ensure all staff have agreed objectives, personal development plans and are compliant with mandatory training.
  • Actively be involved with service development within the respiratory service.
  • To undertake audit and produce service reports to disseminate amongst staff and in the monthly respiratory service meetings.
  • To professionally coordinate a respiratory nurse budget and have awareness of effective use of resources and cost implications demonstrated by optimising staff rotas and effective use of stationery / equipment within the service.
  • Participate in the update and continual assessment of clinical protocols and policies for the diagnosis, treatment and management of respiratory patients.
  • Be able to prioritise own workload daily with excellent administration skills and coordinate the respiratory nurse team.
  • Recognise areas of conflict and manage this and promote a healthy working environment.
