Job overview

Applications are invited for a Specialty Doctor in Otolaryngology Head-Neck Surgery Trust (Higher) based at Sandwell & West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust. This is a permanent post available to start from the 10th June 2025.  This post provides an exciting opportunity to work within a friendly department at Sandwell & West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust - a busy ENT unit, covering Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH) and the Birmingham Treatment Centre (City Health Campus). Emergency, Inpatient and Paediatric service are at MMUH and ENT outpatients and daycase are based at BTC with some additional outpatient clinics at Sandwell site.

This is a non-training job at ST3+ (Registrar) level and would suit doctors working on a long term specialty doctor post or or looking to achieve competences for the portfolio pathway to CCT in ENT. Applicants must hold full GMC registration and have achieved foundation trainee level competencies and 3-4 years of ENT experience. MRCS is essential. Applicants should have the ability to work in a multidisciplinary team, have good interpersonal skills, and demonstrate a caring attitude towards patients with evidence of good clinical practice. These posts have a varied weekly timetable, which includes on call clinical commitments, outpatient clinics and theatre lists.

Closing date: 12th May

Interview date: 21st May (am)

Main duties of the job

The successful appointees will participate in both elective and on-call activity.  Elective work in outpatients at both sites and alongside ward colleagues when on call. There will be weekly allocated theatre lists including emergencies. Participation in the full shift on call rota (1:8 with prospective cover) covering MMUH, including post-take ward round is required. A large majority of activities are consultant led.  Inpatient work includes review of ENT emergency and elective patients, attending both elective and emergency theatre, and attendance on consultant ward rounds as well as performing ward rounds independently.   Although the post is non-training a named supervisor will be assigned monitoring the clinical and educational activities.  Opportunities to progress and develop a subspecialist interest would be supported.  The duties of the job can be changed as per the requirements of the department and with appropriate notice. The post-holders will be responsible for the care of both elective ENT inpatients as well as acute admissions via A&E under the supervision of a consultant. Audit and research activities are actively encouraged. The department offers excellent educational and training opportunities in theatre and clinics. There are regular teaching sessions in the form of Journal Clubs and Departmental teaching.

Working for our organisation

Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust (SWB) serves Birmingham and the Black Country – one of the country’s most culturally diverse areas. It’s a friendly and welcoming place – a place where you can belong, and a place where you can grow.

We care for our patients, we care about our population, and we care about our people.

Our values – Ambition, Respect and Compassion – are at the heart of who we are. They guide us every step of the way; how we work with each other, and how we look after our patients and their families; how we respect and value the rich diversity of our team and our community.

Our Trust has always aspired to be more than a hospital, more than a healthcare provider. Our purpose is to “Improve the Life Chances and Health Outcomes of our Population.” It is what inspires, drives, and unites us every day. It’s what makes us unique.

We want working at SWB to feel like more than just a job. We want our Trust to be a place where you can feel you belong. A place where you feel happy, safe, and rewarded. A place where you can develop your career in whatever way you choose. When we say we’re ‘with you all the way’ we want you to know that we mean it. Visit the SWB website to find out more about our ambitions and people plans.
