Job overview

Applications are invited for the position of Senior Clinical Fellow (ST3+ equivalent) in Older Adult Medicine from forward-thinking individuals. The posts provide structured training and support in gaining the skills and competencies needed to progress your career in Older Adult Medicine.

The post holder will be working with a team of Consultants, Specialist Trainees, Clinical Fellows, Core Trainees and Foundation Year Trainees, across 64 acute inpatient beds and 20 rehabilitation beds at the New Cross site. The post holder will work with the consultant team in the other services provided by the Older Adults Medicine directorate. These include Ortho-geriatrics, Dementia and Delirium In-reach, Front door Frailty, Community Geriatrics, and Perioperative medicine services.

The Older Adult Medicine team would support the post holder in relevant Quality Improvement and Research projects as they arise.

Main duties of the job

  1. Support of Older Adults wards (C18/19) including ward rounds, procedures and support of more junior doctors
  2. Clinical support on FSDEC including patient selection and assessment, requesting and interpreting investigations and discharge decisions as well as review of patients in Hot clinic.
  3. Clinical support of the orthogeriatric service including assessment of new and unwell patients
  4. Support of other older adults services including dementia/ delirium, rehabilitation, urgent community response and virtual ward and clinics as required.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To work appropriately and effectively within your clinical team within the limits of your competency under clinical and educational supervision.

In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, and commensurate with your grade, to play a full part in the supervision and support of other members of your team including more junior medical staff .

In conjunction with colleagues, to take responsibility for the best use of departmental staffing and other resources to ensure the maximum efficiency of the department.

In conjunction with colleagues, to ensure that the requirements of clinical governance are met and to take part in medical audit and research as appropriate.

To accept a duty to other staff and patients to ensure that any risks, incidents and hazards are reported and managed appropriately.
In conjunction with colleagues, to play a full part in the rota for the department and to provide cover for colleagues in respect of periods of leave and, under agreed circumstances, to be available to provide emergency cover.


To ensure that there are adequate arrangements for hospital staff involved in the care of your patients to be able to contact you when necessary.

 

Person specification

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full registration and a license to practice with the GMC.
Desirable criteria
  • MRCP
  • Other basic degree, e.g. BSc, Honours or undergraduate distinction

Management Skills

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrate effective team working skills.
  • Time management/organisational ability. An example may be they have developed and run training programmes.
  • Proven knowledge of systems and process of NHS or equivalent.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • 2 years of post qualification experience
  • Management of acute and chronic general medical diseases under supervision
Desirable criteria
  • Presented evidence of experience to date supported by references
  • Up to date ALS or ATLS certificate
  • Attainment of the UK foundation programme or an equivalent level of experience
  • Senior Fellows will have 6 mths experience in the chosen speciality minimum equivalent to ST 1/2
