Are you a qualified pharmacist looking to significantly develop your skills in Acute & Emergency Medicine?

Due to exciting service improvement initiatives, we're building a strong team of pharmacists within our Emergency Services directorate at The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust and would love to hear from you.

In this role, you'll provide specialist pharmaceutical expertise to acutely unwell patients on the Acute Medical Unit. As your skills and experience grow, with the support of a senior pharmacist, you'll also extend this provision to patients within the Emergency Department.

You'll benefit from comprehensive support for your professional development. A team of senior pharmacists, under the guidance of a Principal Pharmacist ACP, will help you achieve your goals across key areas including:

Main duties of the job

To partake in specialised clinical pharmacy duties on the Acute & Emergency Medicine areas, ensuring core clinical pharmacy activities are undertaken.

Supervise/provide professional support to junior pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, students and support staff.

Managed by senior pharmacist responsible for acute & emergency medicine with oversight from the principal pharmacist for the area.

Undertakes postgraduate clinical training where relevant to the post.

To act as an independent prescriber once registered with the GPhC in line with local policy and entered in the trust NMP register.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To provide a comprehensive clinical pharmacy service to wards and departments providing a medicines management service directly to patients with support and training from experienced staff.

To participate in the pharmacy dispensary, late night and  oncall rotas as necessary. 

To provide advice to medical and nursing staff on drug usage, and encourage compliance with the hospital/health economy formulary to ensure safe, rational , and economic prescribing.

To provide a professional lead to pharmacy technical and support staff managing medicines in designated ward areas.

To integrate into the multidisciplinary team and attend ward rounds making proactive interventions in individual patient’s therapy by providing information on drug related issues and acting as a Pharmacy contact.

To provide advice to patients on the correct use of medication and ensure that directions associated with medications are understood, including the main side-effects of the medications.

To identify drug related admissions and where appropriate follow through with a yellow card report to the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).

Resolve medicines related problems associated with individual patients between primary and secondary care.

To support senior pharmacists contributing/providing pharmaceutical advice to the multidisciplinary audit of treatment guidelines.

To support senior pharmacists providing pharmaceutical advice at directorate level.

To maintain an up to date knowledge of developments in medical and pharmaceutical practice, as part of their own continuing professional development.

Person specification

Qualification

Essential criteria
  • Masters Degree in Pharmacy
  • Registration with GPhC as a pharmacist
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in hospital pharmacy as a rotational clinical pharmacist
  • Completed the pharmacy clinical diploma or equivalent (score 2 if commenced but not completed)
  • Independent prescriber or working towards it (score 2 if commenced but not completed)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working as part of a multidisciplinary team
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of participation in an outside group within pharmacy e.g. UKCPA
  • Evidence of interests outside of pharmacy to maintain wellbeing and work life balance
  • Evidence of participation in service improvement projects
