Job overview
This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated, enthusiastic and adaptable Pre-treatment Superintendent to join our work force and be part of a friendly and patient focused Radiotherapy Team.
The Deanesly Centre, based at The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, is a paperlite radiotherapy facility equipped with two Philips Brilliance Wide Bore CT scanners, four Elekta HD Linear Accelerators and has a fully integrated Mosaiq network. The department is innovative and has developed the service it delivers to embrace new technology, offering IMRT, VMAT, DIBH (voluntary breath hold and using Elekta ABC), IGRT, SABR, 4DCT/4DCBCT and gynaecological Brachytherapy. This offers plenty of learning and development opportunities for all staff members.
The team includes our dedicated booking team, support workers, assistant practitioners, therapeutic radiographers, advanced practitioners and Consultant Therapeutic radiographers, and provides a fantastic opportunity for you to develop your career with us.
Applicants must have 2 years clinical experience as a Senior I Therapeutic Radiographer working within the pre-treatment setting, be adaptable to support service needs and able to communicate effectively with all members of the Oncology team.
Main duties of the job
- The post holder will be expected to play a key role in the operational and clinical management of the radiotherapy service. They would be expected to ensure the provision of a high-quality patient-focused service and to provide support to radiographers at all levels, assistants and students.
- The post holder will be one of the team of dedicated superintendents and advanced practitioners, each with specific individual responsibility, providing leadership for staff and quality care for patients within the centre.
- To be primarily responsible for managing and co-ordinating the day-to-day clinical operations of the CT simulator suite and pre-treatment and on-treatment review clinics in accordance with the policies of the directorate and trust
- To assist in the provision of all aspects of the radiotherapy service to ensure high quality patient care in collaboration with the superintendent team, advanced practitioners and department managers, to ensure a seamless service.
- To liaise with other disciplines to monitor and improve the radiotherapy service.
- To support junior members of staff in maintaining and developing professional and personal skills and standards.
- To assist in the production of all departmental policy as required.
- To assist the Head of Radiotherapy in the implementation of change within the radiotherapy service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
PROFESSIONAL
- To be responsible for maintaining and developing radiographic standards and practices.
- To manage the pre-treatment suite, incorporating CT scanners, planning clinics, contrast and cannulation service and radiotherapy booking.
- To ensure provision of optimal CT images to facilitate accurate treatment planning.
- To participate in the radiographer and student training programmes, supervising and demonstrating procedures, and supporting and educating junior staff and students to ensure maintenance of a quality pre-treatment service.
- To participate in the pre-treatment on-call rota, covering weekends and bank holidays.
- To develop and maintain multi-disciplinary relationships, including clinical oncologists, medical physics and nursing staff amongst others, to provide optimal service quality.
- To liaise with all other disciplines/specialities/voluntary agencies as required.
- To lead the radiographer-led Breast localisation service.
- To undertake clinical audits as required to monitor practice.
- To bring to the attention of the Head of Radiotherapy, Radiotherapy Operations Manager, superintendent radiographers and clinical oncologists any matter of clinical concern.
- To maintain up-to-date knowledge of current and future technical developments, undertaking continuous professional development and attending courses/training as indicated by the needs of the service.
- To undertake mandatory training as required.
- To provide an effective, efficient and patient-centred radiotherapy localisation and planning service.
- To maintain the 31-day and 62-day targets, ensuring compliance in all cases.
- To maintain accurate departmental records in order to provide management information as required.
- To undertake annual staff professional development reviews.
- To participate in recruitment, selection and induction of junior staff.
- To ensure safe operation of all equipment, working with Medical Physics regarding operational procedures.
- To take responsibility for staff compliance with all statutory and local regulations in the pre-treatment suite.
- To assist in clinical governance and risk management issues and take an active role in the quality assurance programme.
- To cover for other superintendents and advanced practitioners in their absence.
- To attend and participate in management meetings as required.
- To provide data as required ensuring compliance with the radiotherapy dataset.
- To comply with the Local Rules of the department in accordance with the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2017.
- To act as Fire warden within the department, liaising with the departmental chief fire warden as required.
- Maintain and promote adherence to RWT Infection Prevention standards, ensuring that all equipment and accessories within the scanning and clinic suites are regularly cleaned.
EDUCATIONAL
- To demonstrate a continuous process of professional and personal development in order to develop own and other’s skills and be aware of the changing needs of the service.
- To play an active role in the training and development of students during their clinical placements
