Rotational Pharmacy Technician Band 4/5

This role is suitable for registered Technicians or those due to qualify soon looking to start their Pharmacy career in a hospital environment.

We welcome Technicians currently working in Hospital, Community or the Primary Care sector wishing to expand their knowledge and develop leadership skills.

As a Band 4 you’ll rotate around the department in areas such as Technical Services, Supply Services (stores, homecare, procurement, distribution & logistics) and Patient Services (clinical/dispensary), whilst being supported to train to progress to a band 5. 

Training to complete either Pathway 1 or 2.

  • Pathway 1: Complete Accredited Checking & Medicines Optimisation training to progress to Band 5
  • Pathway 2: Complete Accredited Checking & NBT Leadership programme to progress to Band 5

As a Band 5 Technician you will continue to develop your skills further, rotating through the areas above. You will also have the opportunity to complete training for the remaining element of either Pathway 1 or 2 depending on the pathway undertaken as a Band 4 or qualifications achieved elsewhere.

Main duties of the job

This post provides operational support to Pharmacy Patient Services Team (dispensary and clinical) by optimising the use of medication to promote health, wellness and disease prevention of our patients. 

In this vital role, you will:

  • Participate in a scheduled rotation through all sections of the pharmacy department.
  • Undertake dispensing of prescriptions in an accurate and timely manner and use professional knowledge to ensure that such duties are performed in accordance with Good Dispensing Practice. (Band 4 and 5)
  • Process and check ward requisitions for controlled drugs. (Band 4 and 5)
  • Maintain competency as an accuracy checking technician by performing dispensary duties. (Band 4 and 5)
  • Support the delivery, development and implementation of all aspects of the clinical pharmacy service. (Band 5)
  • Maintain competency as a medicines optimisation technician by performing clinical pharmacy duties. (Band 5)
  • Provide supervision, support, mentorship and training to Pharmacy Assistants in both the dispensary and clinical team. (Band 5)
  • Act as a role model. (Band 4 and 5)

Carry out all duties in accordance to Trust policies and with regard to legal and safety requirements.

We offer a permanent contract of full or part time hours in excess of 22.5 hours per week with flexible working available.

Working hours within 08:00-19:00 Monday-Friday partaking in 1 in 6 weekend rota 09:00–17:00 plus bank holidays.

Education/Training/Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • S/NVQ level 3 in pharmacy services plus accredited underpinning knowledge or equivalent qualification approved by the General Pharmacy Council
  • Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council GPhC
  • Completed Pharmacy Workforce Development South (PWDS) Dispensing Accuracy Scheme (or equivalent from elsewhere)
  • Completed Pharmacy Workforce Development South (PWDS) Accredited Checking Technician (or equivalent from elsewhere) or willing to work towards this once in post.
  • Working towards Pharmacy Leadership Programme or equivalent, or able to demonstrate ongoing competence in leadership skills
Desirable criteria
  • Pharmacy Workforce Development South (PWDS) Medicines Management / Medicines Optimisation accreditation or willing to work towards this once in post.

Work Experience

Essential criteria
  • Working as an experienced Pharmacy technician registered with the GPhC

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Ability to dispense accurately
  • Able to demonstrate ongoing competence in both Medicines Management / Medicines Optimisation and the accuracy checking of prescriptions (when accredited)
  • Ability to accurately input data and generate labels using the pharmacy computer system
  • Communicate effectively with pharmacy staff, hospital staff and patients/carers both written and verbal
  • Proactive approach to application of knowledge gained to pharmaceutical practice
