Job overview

North Bristol NHS Trust's Imaging Department is seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivated radiographer to join their multi-disciplinary IR team.

The Interventional Radiology department consists of six labs - consisting of  single/ bi-plane and hybrid systems. In addition to this there are two multipurpose fluoroscopy rooms, mobile C-arm Vascular theatre and Endoscopy activity. You will be required to participate in all rooms, covering a range of procedures including cardiac, neuro and peripheral work.  There will also be a requirement to rotate to the Hybrid lab within the Bristol Children’s Hospital.

The department is open 8:00am – 8:00pm Monday to Friday for elective activity. Out of hours emergency work is covered with a mixture of on call duties, late shifts, night shifts and weekend work, covering IR and Neuro procedures.

The department offers opportunity for extended roles for radiographers. Currently there are radiographers performing spinal injections, an EVAR follow up service, cystograms, barium studies and hysterosalpingograms. Main duties of the job

  • Deliver high-quality interventional radiology (IR) procedures to support accurate diagnosis and treatment
  • Perform complex imaging examinations and process detailed imaging data
  • Work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams, following protocols and safety standards
  • Ensure radiation safety and controlled access within IR environments
  • Manage workflow, prioritising patient needs and maintaining efficient service delivery
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues, patients, and wider hospital teams
  • Support supervision, training, and mentoring of junior staff
  • Assist in the day-to-day running of the IR department when required
  • Maintain accurate records using systems such as RIS and PACS
  • Participate in on-call, rotational duties, audit, research, and service development
  • Adhere to professional, regulatory, and organisational policies and guidelines

Applicants must have experience within Interventional Radiology / Cardiology. You must hold the Diploma of the Society of Radiographers DCR(R) or BSc Radiography or equivalent and have a current Health Professions Council (HCPC) registration. An experience of cross-sectional imaging would be an advantage, together with excellent communication and computer skills.

1.    Perform complex unsupervised examinations relevant to appropriate level of training and experience. 
2.    Process and manipulate complex data.
3.    Work within departmental teams following protocols and guidance.
4.    Control access of patients, staff and others to the IR labs with particular reference to radiation safety as outlined in the local rules. 
5.    Spend sufficient time in IR to retain competence and be familiar with all equipment to be able to undertake out of hours IR on-call service.
6.    Rotate through all IR labs as required.
7.    Act as non-medical referrers to request nephrostomy exchanges as per protocol.
8.    Administer IV contrast via butterfly or cannula as required.
9.    General first line supervisory duties.
10.    Rotate through radiology departments if required.
11.    Take short term responsibility for the running of the IR department in the absence of the band 7 or modality lead.
12.    Prioritise and assess workflow always reacting to the needs and safety of patients. 
13.    Collaborate with Consultant Radiologists, Departmental Superintendents, peers, and less experienced staff in delegating, scheduling and carrying out examinations and specialised techniques.
14.    Liaise with Nursing, Clerical and Portering staff within the department and with Nursing, Medical and hospital staff of other wards and departments to ensure a smooth, efficient service to department users.  
15.    Communicate detailed complicated information effectively. Recognise and overcome barriers to communication.
16.    Utilise appropriate methods of communication systems available within the department and Trust e.g., PACS, RIS, email systems. 
17.    Form and maintain good working relationships with all linked professionals and colleagues in the department. 
18.    Ensure any compliments and complaints from any source, are reported immediately to their Line Manager
19.    Adhere to the Trust and Departmental policies, procedures, and guidelines. These will include:
•    Health and Safety
•    Quality Assurance
•    Infection Control
•    Major Incidents, 
•    Dress code, 
•    Sickness absence 
•    Punctuality etc, 
20.    Participate in Annual Appraisal reviews with a nominated appraiser. 
21.    Assist in the introduction of new technology and new methods of working as appropriate to the work of a Senior Radiographer.
22.    Report all incidents of injury to themselves or patients to a line manager and complete appropriate incident form. 
23.    Ensure the updating of the Radiology Information System (RIS). 
24.    Participate in the provision of a 24-hour 7 day per week service cover. 
25.    Undertake and participate in audit and research.
26.    Comply with Departmental Ionising Radiation Local Rules and Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations, IR(ME)R.
27.    Observe the rules and regulations of their professional bodies. (Society and College of Radiographers and Health Professions Council).

Essential criteria
  • Must hold the Diploma of the Society of Radiographers DCR(R) or BSc Radiography or equivalent

  • Evidence of completed and planned CPD

Work Experience

Essential criteria
  • Minimum 2 years post registration radiographic experience
  • Relevant experience working in Interventional Radiology
  • Experience in IR Angiography
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working as a Radiographer within the NHS

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Confident in communicating with a broad range of individuals using various methods
  • Ability and judgement to act independently to resolve complex problems
