As a band 5 staff nurse working within our team, you will be responsible for the day to day care of babies and their families.

The babies in our care can be as premature at 22 weeks gestation and need many months of neurologically supportive developmental care. We also care for babies born at term with a variety of medical conditions. 

Our team is a well established Level 3 unit providing a centre of excellence for babies requiring medical and neurological assessment and treatment, and a tertiary referral centre for the South west neonatal network.  

Our unit has 34 cots, comprising of 8 ITU ,8 HDU and 18 SC, with an additional 10 cots on our Transitional Care Ward.

Our in house Practice Development team are passionate about professional and personal development and actively encourage those looking to apply for neonatal qualifications when in post. We are also proud to be able to offer support to those keen to transition from adult nursing and midwifery into neonatal intensive care.

The Band 5 Staff Nurse will work and communicate effectively within the multidisciplinary team and contribute to the successful provision of the service.
You will be responsible for assessment, planning, provision, maintenance and evaluation of family centred patient care in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team and the infants parents.
The post holder will take responsibility for the supervision and guidance of other staff including health care assistants and students on a daily basis.
You will actively contribute to the provision of a good learning environment by taking on the role of mentor/assessor for learners e.g. Student nurses and support worker roles.

Education/Training/Qualifications

  • RGN/RN/RNC/RM
  • Teaching and assessing qualification or willing to undertake after 2 years post registration
  • Approved Neonatal Life Support Course
  • Child Protection training Level 3 (Level 2 considered but must be prepared to do Level 3 when in post)

  • Neonatal qualification in specialism or willingness to undertake

Work Experience

  • Minimum 1 years and recent (within 18 months) experience in an acute hospital setting (preferably NICU)
  • Expectation to undertake training for extended roles required by the ward/department

  • Experience of working in a Neonatal Setting (as a last placement student) or significant evidence of knowledge of specialism
  • Mentorship experience

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Advanced communication skills, verbal &written, to include report writing and record keeping
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Ability to undertake shift work
  • Basic computer/IT skills and expectation to develop these in line with the needs of the service ie Email use, ICE, Badgernet, use of electronic databases to search for professional articles
  • Ability to organise own workload.
  • Time management/Basic Problem solving skills
  • Experience/knowledge of family centered care
