Job overview

The Operational Health and Safety Manager will line manage the H&S Advisory and Administration functions of the department.

The post provides a deputy service to the Head of Health and Safety.

Main duties of the job

The main duties of the role are to support and lead a team of H&S Advisors to deliver an advisory service to all hospital sites. The post will lead on auditing departments to verify the effectiveness of  the Trust's Health and Safety Policies and accompanying arrangements. Full duties are listed within the job description.

Qualification and Training

Essential criteria
  • NEBOSH Level 6 Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent degree standard (or working towards)
  • Management qualification/transferable people management experience
  • Recognised qualification in teaching or training and development
  • Recognised IT qualification or IT skills - able to use Microsoft Office and other relevant packages

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of designing, delivering and evaluating training
  • NHS or healthcare experience
  • Supervisory/line management experience
  • Current Health and Safety management and advisory experience
  • Clear communicator and negotiator both internally and externally in order to produce positive results with benefits for the organisation
  • Managing change

Skills and Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Proven knowledge and understanding of relevant legislation and best practice
  • Knowledge and understanding of current NHS risk management issues including Care Quality Commission outcomes/ Occupational Health and Safety Standards
  • Able to identify training and development needs and facilitate the design of appropriate solutions to meet those needs
  • Well developed and demonstrable communication skills/ influencing skills oral and written
  • Able to build and maintain constructive partnerships with both internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to manage varied and complex workload balancing strategic with operational requirements
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Personal initiative and drive to deliver and exceed
  • Innovative, motivated and adaptable
  • Confident leader, able to gain commitment from Health and Safety team staff and other colleagues
