Next Steps

After successful allocation to a clinical area, new colleagues will attend a Trust induction. Your first few weeks on the ward will be supernumerary to allow for an easeful transition into your new team.

All locations offer a supernumerary period of at least 2 weeks with some areas routinely offering longer.

Main duties of the job

· Teenage & Young Adult Cancer Unit

· Theatres

· Endoscopy

· Cardiac Cath Labs

· Trauma and Orthopaedic inpatient wards

· Short Stay Surgical and Medical ward

As a registered nurse, you will make a real difference to patients' lives.  We pride ourselves on recruiting high calibre nurses who are compassionate, motivated and deliver the highest quality care.

You will be required to :

  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care needs from admission to timely transfer or discharge.
  • Work as part of the nursing team & MDT progressing to:
    • Either leading the team for a span of duty on a regular basis in a Ward or Department
    • Or be responsible and accountable for the total patient care of a critically ill patient or group of patients

Act as professional role model/team leader setting standards of practice promoting clinical effectiveness and opportunities for teaching others as part of a 24hour service.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • RN (NMC registered) / or NVQ 3 Operating Department Practice pre 2004 or Diploma in Higher Education Operating Department Practice post 2004
  • Current NMC registration / or current Health Professions Council registration for ODPs
Desirable criteria
  • Work towards relevant university accredited post basic study programmes Eg: A&E course, ITU course, Care of the Elderly, PICU, Renal, Oncology, etc

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Broad knowledge and experience of clinical nursing practice within a hospital environment
  • Interest in the clinical area
  • Experience of teaching
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of taking charge

Skills and Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrate competence in clinical skills relevant to the clinical area
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, able to communicate effectively with patients, carers and MDT.
  • Computer skills
  • Competence in calculations for safe administration of medicines/fluids
  • Ability to take the lead, initiate and ensure appropriate action in response to the deteriorating patient
  • Clinical decision making ability
  • Teaching/supervisory skills
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision
