Job overview
This is an opportunity for an enthusiastic, flexible and hard working individual to join the GI Surgery Outpatient Department at St Michael's Hospital, Bristol.
Working as part of a small team in a busy environment, you will draw on your experience and skills to effectively communicate with patients, clinicians and peers to support the effective management of a range of administrative tasks.
Previous experience of being an initial point of contact for patients.
Ability to use initiative and manage your own workload.
The ability to communicate both via telephone and in writing.
Appetite to learn and develop.
IT literate. Previous experience using Careflow or other patient administration system is desirable.

Main duties of the job
Communication:
- To support the triaging of referrals Manage patient communications via telephone & through Trust systems
- Be point of contact & liaise with clinical & non-clinical staff via
telephone & email - Escalate queries, capacity problems & general issues
- Communicate changes to clinics & appointments to patients
Patient Care:
- To show a caring & professional approach towards everyone

Essential criteria
- Clerical/administrative experience, including filing and/or reception
- Experience of dealing with the public, both on the telephone and in person
Desirable criteria
- Previous NHS experience
- Experience of using a Patient Administration System
Qualifications and Training
Essential criteria
- Educated to GCSE, grade C or above (or equivalent) in English Language and Maths
- Business and Administration Level 3 NVQ or equivalent experience
Skills and Abilities
Essential criteria
- Effective and polite manner when dealing with people, both face to face and on the phone
- Able to work under pressure and meet deadlines whilst maintaining a high standard of accuracy
- Ability to work effectively in a busy team, adjust to change and motivate others
- Ability to work on your own, using your own initiative, if required
- Confidence to handle difficult conversations with patients, relatives and carers
- Effective organisational skills
- Good IT skills including Microsoft packages
- Attention to detail
