Job overview
A full-time and part time substantive role has arisen for a suitably qualified enthusiastic person to join our team of Physiologists in the Lung function department, within Respiratory Medicine Department at the Bristol Royal Infirmary.
The ideal applicant will have a BSc in Clinical Physiology or equivalent qualification and have successfully completed ARTP Parts I & II, Practitioner level exam or equivalent. You should also have relevant experience in a Lung function department.
As well as carrying out clinical investigations, the role will involve deputising for the Lead Respiratory Physiologists, assisting with service development, providing supervision and on-going education for other members of staff and students on placement within the department. You should have the ability to work flexibly, be able to work with your own initiative and enjoy working as part of a team. A keen eye for detail and accuracy is also required. You will be expected to work closely with other healthcare professionals, including respiratory consultants, nurses and Physiotherapists.
A full time role is 37.5 hours per week and a part time role.
Main duties of the job
- To undertake the technical and clinical reporting on a range of basic and advanced assessments in the Lung Function department including; Spirometry +/- bronchodilator responsiveness testing, Lung volumes, Transfer factor, Six-minute walk tests, Oral and nasal exhaled nitric oxide tests (FeNO and nNO), Skin prick tests, Respiratory muscle pressure tests, Mannitol challenge tests, Hypoxic challenge tests, Induced sputum tests, Exercise induced bronchoconstriction tests and Cardiopulmonary exercise tests.
- To work collaboratively with colleagues and other professionals to ensure services meet changing healthcare needs.
- To deputise for the Lead Respiratory Physiologists, covering all aspects of the role, when required.
- Participate in quality assurance, audit and research and development programmes.

Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- Relevant experience of working in a Respiratory Physiology department
- In the performance, analysis and technical reporting of basic and advanced lung function assessments
- In the supervision and training of junior and trainee staff, and the development of in-house training programmes
Desirable criteria
- Experience of leading cardiopulmonary exercises tests and writing clinical reports
- Teaching on local, regional and national courses in relevant fields
- In participation in research/service evaluation/audit
Qualifications and Training
Essential criteria
- MSc or BSc in Clinical Physiology or Healthcare Science specialising in Respiratory, or PTP/STP or equivalent
- Eligible for RCCP, HCPC, AHCS membership or equivalent
- Continuing evidence of CPD
Desirable criteria
- ARTP Part 1 & 2 or Practitioner Exam
Skills and Abilities
Essential criteria
- Able to work autonomously and is guided by principles and broad occupational policies or regulations. May seek advice where appropriate
- The post requires a combination of: o Frequent light physical effort (carrying equipment 2 – 10kg) o Occasional moderate physical effort (moving morbidly obese patients in wheelchairs) o Frequent standing, kneeling or sitting in a restricted position
- Able to deal with exposure to distressing and/or emotional circumstances, with occasional exposure to highly distressing and emotional circumstances, which may include : o Patients who have a rapidly deteriorating condition (including paediatric and older adult patients) o End-of-life and Palliative Care issues
- Able to deal with frequent exposure to unpleasant working conditions (body odour, sputum) with occasional exposure to hazards (verbal aggression)
- Able to undertake periods of frequent prolonged concentration with occasional intense concentration for advanced procedures and complex analysis of results
- Able to analyse and clinically interpret data from a range of basic to advanced lung function assessments
- Able to analyse and handle complex or sensitive information, where empathic or reassurance skills are required and to communicate this to a wide range of people from Consultants to Patients to general public and children, including those with sensory, physical or learning difficulties
- Highly developed physical skills, where accuracy and/or speed are essential, and may include manipulation of fine tools, obtaining arterial/capillary blood gases or the assembly of specific complex circuitry
