Job overview
Applications are invited for a full-time locum consultant post in obstetrics and fetal medicine, for a period of 12 months from September 2026. The appointee will join a cohesive, friendly team of 38 consultants in obstetrics and gynaecology working across Bristol and Weston.
Main duties of the job
The appointee will be an experienced obstetrician and will work with 21 other obstetricians and specialists within the department to provide a full elective and emergency obstetric service to secondary and tertiary level patients attending the hospital. Development of specialist areas of interest is encouraged and will be supported in the job plans. The appointee will work collaboratively within the department to provide secondary and tertiary level care for the wide range of medical problems referred to St. Michael's Hospital as part of the University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust.
The appointee will contribute fully to the obstetric workload of the department including delivery suite sessions and on call, and will take an active part in undergraduate and postgraduate education. Experience in clinical leadership and a keen interest to acquire leadership roles in the department is hugely welcomed.
The timetable may be subject to change by mutual agreement with the Lead Doctor following job plan review. The post is based at St Michael’s Hospital.

Qualifications & Training
Essential criteria
- Full and specialist registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) or
- eligible for specialist registration within six months of interview or
- Holder of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or evidence of within six months of award of CCT or equivalent by date of interview
- Completion of RCOG accredited sub specialist training in maternal/fetal medicine
Desirable criteria
- ATSM in advanced labour ward practice
- ATSM in labour ward lead
- Higher degree (MD/PhD/MSc) or teaching qualification (postgraduate certificate or higher)
Experience
Essential criteria
- A thorough and broad training in obstetrics and gynaecology
- To have completed the RCOG Core and curriculum and advanced training modules
- To be able to take responsibility for delivering the service without direct supervision
- To be able to respond quickly and efficiently to emergencies
Desirable criteria
- Broad range of IT skills
- Experience in addressing health inequalities
Clinical Knowledge and Skills

- Up to date knowledge and experience of relevant specialty

Clinical Governance and Audit
