Job overview
An opportunity has arisen to join the Department of Otolaryngology / Head & Neck Surgery at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust. The service provides adult and Paediatric outpatient and inpatient ENT activity at the major teaching hospital in Bristol, but also provides outreach clinics and inpatient support and advice across a range of other sites.
The Trust is the regional centre for Otolaryngology, major head and neck surgery, skull base surgery, major ear surgery and hearing implantation
Main duties of the job
The appointee(s) will join the ENT department which consists of 11 consultants, 7 specialty registrars, 3 specialty doctors, 5 GP trainees and 4 clinical fellows. The department provides local and regional ENT services for adults and children. This includes specialist paediatric, otological implant and head and neck services. Responsibilities include admission and care of adult and paediatric emergency and elective ENT patients. The appointee will also contribute to the provision of ENT Hot Clinics. The appointee will participate in the on call rota alongside GP trainees and Clinical Fellows. There will be opportunities to participate in clinical audit, research, teaching and service improvement projects.
These posts would suit doctors who have a career interest in ENT at grade ST1-2. These posts have an April 2026 or August 2026 start date.

Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- Minimum of 4-6 months experience in a surgical specialty or Emergency Medicine
- Can demonstrate evidence of management of acute surgical emergencies and "ward-based" care of surgical patients
- Understands the principles of Clinical Governance and Patient Safety
- Can critically appraise research evidence and interpret national/local clinical guideline
Desirable criteria
- Previous experience specifically in ENT / Otolaryngology
- Knowledge of managing ENT emergencies
- Experience in conducting Audit or Quality Improvement Projects (QIP)
- Research presentations (oral/poster) or publications in peer-reviewed journals; experience in collaborative research projects
Skills and Abilities
Essential criteria
- Highly developed communication skills; ability to communicate complex information to patients and staff
- Competence in basic surgical skills (suturing, knot-tying, aseptic technique)
- Experience in teaching medical students or junior colleagues
- Proficiency in clinical IT systems and maintaining accurate electronic patient records
- Evidence of proactively seeking feedback from colleagues and patients. Adapts behaviours and practice appropriately where necessary
- Capacity to recognise own limitations and develop appropriate coping mechanisms
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of advanced communication skills training
- Proficiency in ENT-specific skills (e.g., rigid/flexible nasendoscopy, microsuction)
- Evidence of formal teaching roles or development of training courses/curriculum
- Advanced data analysis skills for clinical work, research or audit purposes

- Eligibility to work in the UK

Qualifications and Training
Essential criteria
- Primary Medical Degree (MBChB or equivalent)
- Full GMC registration with license to practice at time of appointment
- Completion of Foundation Training Year 2 level (or equivalent)
- Evidence of engagement with professional development including structured educational plans
Desirable criteria
- Intercalated degree (BSc, BA, or equivalent)
- Higher degree (MSc or PhD)
- Formal qualifications in Medical Education (PG Cert/Dip/Masters)
- Up-to-date ATLS or APLS certification
- Evidence of engagement in further surgical training (e.g., MRCS Part A)
- MRCS (ENT) or DOHNS (Diplomate of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery)
