Job overview

We are currently looking to recruit a full time shift Switchboard Operator on a permanent contract.

The successful candidate will join a friendly front line team operating a busy acute hospital switchboard. You will need excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be calm in emergency situations.

The  full time position is for a Shift operator working on a rotational 9-week shift pattern. Including weekends and bank holidays if shift falls on them.  

Main duties of the job

  • As the first point of contact for the telecommunication service of the UHBW Trust, operators are responsible for providing an efficient switchboard/information service 24/7 to all staff and customers of the Trust.
  • Carry out all aspects of the responsibilities of an operator in a pleasant, courteous and professional manner at all times. 
  • Operators will be required to use their own initiative efficiently and accurately when dealing with Emergency/Life and Death procedures and situations outside the parameters of these procedures.

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • Educated to GCSE Standard or equivalent in English and Mathematics.
  • Qualification in IT or proven use of IT packages.
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of Data Protection and Patient confidentiality issues.
  • Customer Service NVQ.
  • Typing/Word Processing Qualification

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Previous Switchboard/Call Centre experience or Customer focused role.
  • Experience of working well within a Team Environment.
  • Experience of working under pressure and managing a demanding workload.
Desirable criteria
  • Customer Care.
  • NHS Experience.
  • Previous work within Emergency Services.
  • Shift work/Night work Experience.

Skills and Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Excellent communication skills including confident/pleasant telephone manner.
  • To have used BTS Switchboard and Multitone Bleep system or similar.
  • Prepared to train/mentor others.
  • Good spelling skills.
