Consultant in Emergency General Surgery

NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

As part of the transition to a Group Clinical Services structure within Bristol NHS Foundation Trust, there is an increased expectation of cross-site working.

Although roles will have a designated base, post holders are likely to be required to work across multiple Trust sites in line with service needs. Where this is not included in the initial job plan, any future requirement arising from the departmental restructures will be addressed through the job planning process. Travel time will be taken into consideration in line with contractual expectations.

North Bristol NHS Trust (NBT) and University of Bristol and Weston Hospital Trust (UHBW) are working towards merging as one organisation from summer 2026.

This will not affect staff applying for positions directly with UHBW.

As an organisation we recognise the value of a healthy work-life balance. When applying, speak to us about how we might be able to accommodate flexible working, so your work life fits around your home life.

We particularly welcome applications from Black, Asian and minority ethnic candidates as they are under-represented within the Trust.

Job overview

Applications are invited for a full-time substantive Consultant post in Emergency General Surgery, with a specialist interest in acute biliary surgery, within the Division of Surgery at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW).
This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic, collaborative and forward-thinking surgical team working across multiple sites, including Weston General Hospital, Bristol Royal Infirmary, and North Bristol Trust. The successful candidate will contribute to the delivery of high-quality emergency and elective surgical care, playing a central role in the continued development and expansion of Emergency General Surgery and acute biliary services across the Trust. The role includes participation in on-call rotas across two sites within a well-supported and evolving cross-site model of care.
Candidates should have a strong interest in acute biliary surgery, and should ideally possess, or be keen to develop, advanced skills in the management of acute biliary disease, including index admission (“hot”) cholecystectomy, laparoscopic ultrasound, and laparoscopic bile duct exploration. The Trust offers a supportive environment with an experienced faculty to facilitate the development of these skills where required.
This substantive position offers excellent opportunities for professional development, service innovation, and involvement in teaching and research within a large, progressive NHS organisation with strong academic links.

Main duties of the job

We are one of the UK’s leading Upper GI centres with an international reputation for healthcare research. This post is designed to support the delivery of the specialist benign UGI and Emergency General Surgery service. It is expected that the successful appointee will have a particular interest in acute biliary surgery.
The post-holder will also have responsibilities to develop and contribute to continuing education, professional development, audit and research within the Division and Trust.
Applicants must be on the GMC Specialist Register or equivalent or within 6 months of attaining Specialist Registration at the time of interview. Applications from candidates who, for personal reasons, are unable to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for this post.
