Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a band 6 midwife to join our Antenatal and Newborn Screening Team. We are a small, friendly team dedicated to providing supportive, compassionate care to women who may be facing difficult decisions regarding their pregnancy and screening results.

 

The role involves assisting in coordinating the antenatal screening and newborn bloodspot programme, counselling expectant parents on their screening choices and options following an unexpected result. You will be required to work as part of the multidisciplinary team, liaising with external agencies such as sexual health services, external screening labs, other hospital trust screening teams and NHS England.

 

The successful applicant will be motivated, compassionate and supportive of womens’ choices with strong attention to detail and a passion for providing high quality care. This is a great opportunity for a new challenge and to expand your skills and knowledge in a varied and interesting role.

Skills, Abilities & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of Midwifery issues in the wider context of the NHS
  • Excellent theoretical and practical knowledge of Midwifery
  • Knowledge of responsibilities under the Health and Safety Act 1974
  • Knowledge of NMC Code
  • Clinical Skills relevant to post.
  • Understanding of learning and teaching styles and their application
  • Knowledge of vulnerable adult and child protection issues
  • Commitment to the principles of Clinical Governance and patient safety
  • Able to identify problems and recommend solutions
  • IT literate on Microsoft Office and Excel
  • Excellent communication skills with all members of the team, patients and relatives
  • Good verbal and written English which can be evidenced at interview or IELTs level 7 (in all elements) or above
  • Good record keeping skills
  • Demonstrates effective management in the clinical environment
  • Able to organise complex packages of patient care
  • Effectively prioritises and co-ordinates own work
  • Awareness and respect for colleagues, patients and relatives cultural, religious and emotional needs and beliefs
  • Flexible approach to working hours and practices
  • Ability to act as a mentor for Midwives, students and MCAs, skilled in teaching trained and untrained staff, carers and patients
  • Good Presentation Skills

Experience

  • Experience of safeguarding issues/working with vulnerable families
  • Experience of implementing antenatal screening

Education, Qualifications & Training

  • Registered Midwife
  • Evidence of continuing professional development and its application
  • Accredited Mentorship course
  • Diploma / Degree level
Desirable criteria
  • NVQ Assessor
  • Evidence of Further Study

  • Ability to travel to other sites.
  • Ability to work internal rotation
