Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced nurse or clinical nurse specialist with knowledge of managing Upper Gastro-Intestinal (UGI) Cancer patients, who is prepared to take the lead on maintaining and developing our UGI cancer nursing team within Buckinghamshire NHS Trust. 

The role includes line management of at least one other team member at Band 6 level and includes service development of this vital nursing service. It also requires close working with all members of the UGI MDT, colleagues in the acute setting and also those in the community in supporting the needs of this complex patient group. 

The post is based at Stoke Mandeville Hospital but can involve cover on other hospital sites including Wycombe and Amersham.

Main duties of the job

Provide clinical leadership for the Upper GI Cancer Nursing Service, supporting patients diagnosed with Upper GI malignancies, including oesophageal, gastric, hepatobiliary, pancreatic and cancers of unknown primary. Act as the key worker and primary point of contact, ensuring delivery of holistic, patient-centred care throughout the cancer pathway.

 Coordinate care across acute, community and specialist services, facilitating timely referrals to multidisciplinary teams including palliative care, dietetics and allied health professionals. Work collaboratively with ward teams, Acute Oncology, Endoscopy and external cancer centres to ensure seamless, high-quality care.

Provide specialist support to patients at diagnosis, treatment and follow-up, completing holistic needs assessments and signposting to appropriate services. Act as a key liaison between Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust and Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to support continuity of care.

Lead service development initiatives, including the implementation of personalised stratified follow-up pathways in line with the NHS Long Term Plan for Cancer, improving patient experience, outcomes and service delivery.

Person specification

Education, Qualifications & Training

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse – 1st level with NMC
  • Post Registration Oncology qualification
  • National Advanced Communications Skills Course or training in complex communication models
  • Working towards Masters or equivalent level of study
  • Teaching/training qualification and/or substantial coaching/teaching experience.
Desirable criteria
  • Cancer and/or Palliative Care Degree

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Oncology/GI/ palliative care experience- with experience at Band 6 level
  • Experience of managing a team
  • Leadership skills and knowledge in managing a service and people
  • Experience in delivering and evaluating teaching programmes/sessions to health care professionals including medical staff

Skills, Abillities & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Understanding and up to date knowledge of issues relevant to post (cancer/cancer treatment complications, palliative care and end of life care)
  • Awareness of key policies and national recommendations relating to UGI cancers and the broader cancer, palliative and end of life care agenda
  • Excellent interpersonal skills (including the use of advanced communication skills), to communicate sensitive information to patients and carers in a variety of settings ie phone/virtually & F2F
  • Self-motivated, pro-active and innovative
  • Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team, respecting the skills and contributions of others
  • Self-aware with knowledge of self-care initiatives and wellbeing.
  • Awareness of Trust policies relating to: HR Policies, Recruitment and Retention, Disciplinary Procedures and Completion of management course
  • Effective IT skills
