Job overview

This is a full time (10 PA) locum post. It will be based at across sites with clinics at both Stoke Mandeville and Wycombe Hospitals.  Job share would be considered, 5 PAs per candidate

The Paediatric department has been successful in getting approval to expand their consultant presence by new consultants to meet the future workload to deliver safe high quality care to all children in Buckinghamshire with a particular focus on our trust care values.

We are seeking a keen, dynamic general paediatrician with a special interest that will compliment the current team

The post holder will carry out both general paediatric and neonatal duties and will participate in the overnight on-call consultant rota . There will also be weekend evening “ twilight” shifts in the Paediatric ED  to support the middle grades and help protect capacity.

Main duties of the job

We are seeking at general paediatrician to play a key role in continuing to deliver our acute paediatric and neonatal service while the current post holder is on maternity leave.

The current post holder is helping with our HDU and emergency department liaison and development but is not an essential requirement for applying for this role.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful candidate will join a team of consultants to undertake inpatient and outpatient work in Neonates and General Paediatrics including inpatient ward attending weeks, observation ward attending and on call activities on a pro-rata basis.

Outpatient

·       There will be 2 General Paediatric clinics every week across Stoke Mandeville and Wycombe Hospitals ensuring local access for patients.

·       The post holder will also deliver 9 Rapid Access Clinics (RAC) per year on the days when not twilight on call.

On call

·       The role will involve Paediatrician of the week (POW) and Neonatologist of the week (NOW) totalling 7 a year.

·       There will also be attending weeks for the Children’s Observation Unit (COU) within the Children’s Emergency Department (CED)1.5 weeks / year. During these days s/he will have no other clinical commitment.

 ·       The post holder will have resident duties on a fixed weekday        evening working “Twilight” shifts from 16:00-22:00 hours within the Children’s Emergency Department. There will be a weekend twilight shift to cover the Friday to Sunday evenings for 3 weekends a year to ensure that college standards for Facing the Future are fully met.

Qualifications/Registration

Essential criteria
  • MRCPCH or equivalent
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council. Licence to practice MB, ChB or equivalent
  • On GMC specialist register or within 6 months of receipt of CCT in Paediatrics at time of interview
Desirable criteria
  • Higher Post graduate degree
  • Formal Qualification in Medical Education

Experience/Training

Essential criteria
  • MB, ChB or equivalent
  • Registration on RCPCH CPD programme
  • Level 3 Child protection training.
  • Current APLS and NLS provider status (2 for each)
  • Have clinical experience of assessing and examining children and young people as appropriate to the role to include safeguarding
  • Extensive knowledge of neonatal and general paediatrics
Desirable criteria
  • APLS / NLS Instructor (1 for each)

  • Ability to diagnose and manage wide variety of illness in children.
  • Ability to make good medical notes
