Job overview

There is an opportunity for a Radiographer / Healthcare professional with appropriate experience / qualification in bone densitometry to join the radiology team of Buckinghamshire NHS Trust. 

We are introducing a new fracture prevention service this year in collaboration with Oxford and Reading Trusts. The role will involve running the DEXA service on a brand new Hologic W bone densitometer scanner situated at Buckingham Community Hospital. 

 Buckingham is a small community hospital providing outpatient clinics and rehabilitation support.  We have an x-ray unit there for GP patients. The hospital is situated close to the town centre. 

We have an existing Dexa service at Amersham General Hospital. You may be expected to work at this site as part of a rotation. 

Main duties of the job

The successful post holder would be expected to work independently using initiative, skills and knowledge to provide a high quality and professional DEXA service.  

To provide excellent patient care and signpost patients to appropriate Royal Osteoporosis Society advise for bone health. 

To contribute to quality improvement meetings.

To liaise with fracture prevention nurses and the Rheumatology Consultant to help develop protocols and patient pathways under supervision of the Lead Radiographer. 

To assist with the training and supervision of Radiographers, healthcare practitioners and students in DEXA

Education, Qualifications & Training

Essential criteria
  • Degree or equivalent in Radiography or appropriate DEXA qualification
  • Evidence of CPD and attendance at relevant short courses
  • HPC Registration or equivalent professional qualification.
Desirable criteria
  • Post Graduate Certificate in Bone Densitometry desirable

Skills, Abilities & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Ionising Radiation Legislation
  • Manual handling skills
  • Clear concise oral and written communication skills in order to deal with a range of staff and patients.
  • Ability to develop protocols for clinical imaging
  • Knowledge of Health & Safety issues
  • Ability to deal with difficult situations, complaints, aggressive behaviour
  • Ability to work under own initiative and as part of a team
  • Computer literate
  • Keyboard skills
Desirable criteria
  • Appraisal and objective setting
  • Organisational skills

Experience

Essential criteria
  • 2-3years experience in bone densitometry scanning.
  • DEXA reporting qualification would be advantageous but not essential
  • Supervision and training of junior colleagues
  • Experience of Quality Assurance or up-todate knowledge of Health & Safety and Risk Assessment issues.
