Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust have a vacancy at Trust Registrar level, the post is vacant from 7th August 2024 for 12 months Fixed Term.

The successful applicant will join the middle tier rota
in this popular teaching department. . The post would be ideal for candidates at a registrar level who are looking for more experience in urology and who would like the support of a helpful team of consultants in a busy unit where there is a good mixture of core urology including HoLEP, ureterorenoscopy, TURP, and sub-specialty urology including robotic renal surgery, pyeloplasty, radical prostatectomy, PCNL, mini-supine PCNL and andrology).  Candidates who are looking for more experience prior to gaining a specialist training number are encouraged to apply and there is an excellent track record of previous fellows proceeding to success at National Selection.

The successful applicant would be part of the 1:7 on call rota which is non-residential. 

All applicants must hold a Full GMC Registration with a Licence to Practice in the UK. 

Main duties of the job

Duties including covering elective (Wycombe) and emergency (Stoke Mandeville) activity. There are around 7 all day operating lists per week at Wycombe covering full ranges of elective urology including robotic, open, laparoscopic and endoscopic surgery. Attendance in theatre is programmed and the consultant team will provide hands-on teaching, so that the successful candidate will develop considerable operative competencies in all aspects of operative urology. The emergency service is consultant led, and involves daily ward rounds, in-patient reviews. There is a dedicated emergency list every Thursday morning, and access to the emergency list Monday to Friday as required. We offer input to the National Spinal Injuries Centre, and exposure to neuro-urology is available for interested applicants. The department offers LA transperineal biopsy exclusively for investigation of raised PSA, and experience with this would be welcome.

The post would be ideal for Pre-FRCS candidates with extensive registrar experience in Urology who would like the support of a helpful team of consultants in a busy unit.  We would aim to build an ideal level of supervision and training around the successful candidates depending on seniority and experience.  The candidate could pass through a variety of useful specialties heading towards subsequent CCT application.  The post includes responsibilities aimed at management experience including rota coordination, quality improvement projects and teaching.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Description of working pattern
The duties of the successful applicant are to provide elective diagnostic activity such as outpatients, LA TP prostate biopsy and flexible cystoscopy lists. Programmed elective theatre is also included with at least one full day in theatre supported by one of the consultants. The on call commitment involves medical care for the emergency urology in-patients at Stoke Mandeville, as well as providing urology advice and support for the other clinical specialties on site and reviewing Emergency Department referrals, supported by the on-call consultant. We would actively support the successful candidate in terms of teaching / training courses

  • MB ChB or equivalent
  • ATLS
  • Full GMC Registration with Licence to Practice in the UK

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Urology experience with elective and emergency work
  • Ability to manage urological patients as the first port of call urology opinion on site
  • Clinical and technical skills appropriate to the grade. Difficult catheterisation, flexible cystoscopy and LATP biopsy would be highly beneficial
  • Experience at FY2/CT level of Urology in relevant specialties

Skills, Knowledge and Personal Attributes

  • Demonstrates an ability to communicate effectively with nursing / discharge colleagues
  • Suitable spoken and written English skills and a good standard of communication.
