Applications are invited to apply for a substantive Consultant post in Intensive Care Medicine (ICM) and Anaesthetics at Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
This expansion post comprises 10 programmed activities (PA), however additional PAs may be available on discussion. We are looking for an enthusiastic and progressive clinician to join our friendly, dynamic team of intensivists, anaesthetists and allied professionals. Dual accreditation in Anaesthesia and ICM (or equivalent) is required and applicants should possess or be within 6 months of obtaining both CCTs at time of interview.

Main duties of the job
Job Profile
The successful applicant will add to the existing a group of 10 intensive care consultants with sub-speciality interests in anaesthesia and acute medicine, who are responsible for the 10 bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Within the department, there will be excellent opportunities to develop personal interests including echocardiography (including TOE), ultrasound, research, governance, outreach, ICU follow-up and NHS management. Job share arrangements with neighboring trusts will also be considered on application.
In addition to general adult medical and surgical patients, the unit supports looking after a high number of paediatric patients requiring stabilising critical care and as such, an interest in this area would be advantageous.
The post holder will also provide daytime anaesthetic services for most major surgical specialties including major colorectal, orthopaedics, ENT, gynecology, urology, OMFS and paediatrics..
On-call commitments will be 1 in 11 non-resident for the ICU

Job Outline
- To work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to provide evidence-based care for all in patients. To liaise effectively and in a timely manner with surgical, medical, and nursing colleagues and all other health care agencies when appropriate
- To assist in the provision and development of a safe and effective Service and support the Trust in its aim to provide the best possible care to patients.
- To carry out all duties to the highest possible standard, and in accordance with current quality initiatives within that area of work.

Qualifications / Registration
Essential criteria
- Entry on GMC Specialist Register; eligible for entry on Register or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in anaesthetics and ICM
- FRCA or equivalent
- FFICM, EDIC or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- Further qualifications with a special interest
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Commensurate with FRCA and FFICM
Clinical Experience
Essential criteria
- Demonstrate ability to conduct clinical and operative Anaesthesia in appropriate areas of specialty
- Demonstrate ability to manage complex medical and surgical critical care patients
- Evidence of recent attendance at Advanced Life Support/ Paediatric Advanced Life Support Course or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- Interest/further qualifications in ultrasound for critical care
- Higher training/OOPE in paediatric intensive care/paediatric retrieval
- Anaesthetic experience in robotic and ENT surgery
- Interest in pre-op assessment and regional anaesthesia
Communication Skills
Essential criteria
- Ability to communicate effectively through good verbal and written skills
- Evidence of the ability to communicate with patients, colleagues and staff at all
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge and skills in Human Factors and Crisis Resource Management for anaesthesia/ICU
Teaching
Essential criteria
- Evidence of organising and delivering teaching at under-graduate and post-graduate level
Desirable criteria
- Ability to be able to appraise both trainees and other staff members
- Demonstrate ability as a teacher with evidence of training for the role
- Diploma in Medical Education
- Experience of training/education at deanery/national level
Leadership/ Management skills
Essential criteria
- Ability to effectively organise and manage clinical workload
- Ability to motivate and develop training medical staff
Desirable criteria
- Interest in medical management and governance processes
Personal Attributes
Essential criteria
- Ability to work effectively and productively in a team
- Enthusiasm & ability to work under pressure
- Self-motivation and leadership skills
- Appropriate IT skills for a consultant post in anaesthesia
Other requirements
Essential criteria
- Ability to work independently as well as part of the Anaesthetic Directorate
- To balance individual requirements against those of the Directorate and the Trust as a whole
- Demonstration of immunisation against Hepatitis B plus proof of HbsAg negative status
- Will be required to maintain full registration with the GMC as well as remain on the Specialist Register
- Will need to reside within 10 miles of the Hospital or half an hour’s travelling time for on call commitments
