We are seeking to recruit a Senior Specialist Dental nurse to work within our busy Outpatient Department. This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience in a progressive and developing environment.

Main duties of the job
To assist in the smooth running of the department by providing chairside assistance to all Clinicians, working with all members of the team (and wider team), representing the trust and adhering to the trust values.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Main duties and responsibilities
• Ensure the delivery of high quality professional care throughout the department
• Represent the department in a professional manner at all times
MANAGERIAL
• Deputise on occasions in the absence of the Dental Nurse Team Manager
• Ensure all mandatory training implemented by the Trust is carried out.
CLINICAL/TECHNICAL
• To ensure that patients and visitors needs are met in a courteous, helpful & compassionate way.
• Act as a named nurse for Department clinics.
ORTHODONTICS
• Provide chair side assistance for Orthodontic clinics.
• Assist clinicians facilitating four-handed orthodontic procedures.
MAXILLOFACIAL SURGERY
• Provide chair side assistance for MaxilloFacial clinics
• Assist with head and neck trauma patients referred by Accident & Emergency Department utilising necessary expertise.
LOCAL ANAESTHETIC
• Assist with invasive surgical procedures requiring a high degree of accuracy and dexterity.
• Set up sterile surgical trolleys with all relevant equipment for the proposed procedure.
INTRAVENOUS SEDATION – If Qualified
• Act as the second appropriate person during intravenous sedation sessions.
• Monitor patients clinically and electronically on pulse-oximeters, during surgical procedures while under a sedative medication.
RADIOGRAPHY
• Take intra oral and extra oral radiographic examinations following a clinical prescription observing radiological policies and procedures.
• Critique and assess quality of images.
MAINTENANCE
• Check portable drill and calibrate machine and motors prior to surgery.
• Check and test Blood Glucose monitor.
PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT (Training / Education)
• Be conversant with policies and procedures relating to Fire and Health & Safety.
• Report all accidents and complaints in accordance with Trust policies and assist in investigations of complaints and accidents as required.
PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
• Work closely with medical colleagues providing dental nursing expertise.
• Maintain effective communication links both formal and informal with all staff and external professional agencies and bodies.
GENERAL ENVIRONMENT
• Due to the wide range of tasks the staff member will be required to carry out, they will encounter situations, which will be distressing when dealing with patients, having a wide range of needs.
• They will frequently have to work with hazardous substances i.e: bodily fluids, blood products, radiation and highly flammable toxic substances.
