The CUH Hematopathology & Oncology Diagnostic Service (HODS) are looking to appoint a Consultant Clinical Scientist.

HODS provides the NICE IOG NG47 compliant Specialist Integrated Haematological Malignancy Diagnostic Service (SIHMDS) for 9 NHS trusts within the East of England; including morphology, immunophenotyping and histopathology for the diagnosis, classification and disease monitoring of haematological malignancies for paediatric and adult patients.

The team would like to hear from individuals who are ready to make a significant contribution to clinical and operational aspects of the service in the long term.

Act as the scientific and operational lead for the Haematopathology and Oncology Diagnostic Service (HODS)  providing a regional specialist integrated haematological malignancy diagnostic service (SIHMDS) to the East of England

Act as an expert resource/diagnostician for aspects of haematological malignancy diagnosis and disease monitoring to include microscopy, flow cytometry and complex laboratory defined assay development. 

The role requires frequent communication and close working with members of the haemato-oncology multidisciplinary team, including consultants in diagnostic and clinical Haematology, Haematopathology, Paediatric Haematology, Histopathology, Surgery and Radiology, as well as scientific staff in other CUH and regional laboratories

Participate and actively promote operational interactions and collaboration with co-dependent laboratories (currently the genomics and histopathology labs) and their senior scientific and clinical leadership to deliver effective and coordinated haematopathology diagnostics

Ensure that diagnostic/disease monitoring reports of complex assays are accurate and clinically relevant for MDT discussion

Plan and maintain the service delivery and laboratory activities to comply with all contractual obligations and necessary accreditation bodies including but not limited to UKAS ISO 15189 2022

  • First degree or equivalent in a biological science.
  • State registered Clinical/Biomedical Scientist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
  • Postgraduate degree (MSc, MPhil or PhD) directly related to the specialty.
  • Completion of Higher Specialist Scientific Training (HSST) or management training
  • Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists (FRCPath) Part 1 and Part 2

Experience

  • Experience of managing a laboratory team of scientific/administrative staff

  • Evidence of creating/introducing laboratory defined assays according to clinical needs
  • Experience of peer review of laboratory services to ISO15189 2012 & 2022 standards.
  • Experience of sharing professional/scientific knowledge and learning through presentations, written communication and demonstration at local, national and international forums
  • Evidence of a body of peer reviewed published literature in the field
  • Possess the experience and expertise to contribute to the field at a national level.

  • To be able to review results from other disciplines and incorporate the findings into a cohesive clinical interpretation, and feed this interpretation back to patients, clinicians and scientific staff
  • The ability to effectively communicate the results of highly specialised and complex haematology tests that may include unexpected results to clinical and scientific staff
  • Evidence of service evaluation, development and implementing new test methodologies to improve efficiency and patient services
