Clinical Fellow Core in JVF ICU and NCCU

Clinical Fellow Core

Job overview

Applications are invited for the post of Clinical Fellow Core (CT1-2 equivalent) in Intensive Care Medicine at this busy major UK teaching hospital, commencing 05 August 2026.

Posts exist in both the John Farman ICU (general adult, hepatology and transplant ICU) and NCCU (neurosciences and trauma). The posts are available for a period of 12 months, with post holders typically rotating between units with 6 months on each unit.

Main duties of the job

This position would suit doctors who have, at a minimum, completed their Foundation 2 year and are looking for further experience.  Previous ICM experience would be desirable but not essential.  Resident doctors on both units work with middle grades during out-of-hours work, and there is dedicated consultant supervision (non-resident overnight).

In order to be considered applicants must meet the following essential criteria:

•    MBBS or equivalent qualification
•    Full Registration and a Licence to Practice with the GMC at time of application
•    Completion of a Foundation Training Programme or equivalent

Working for our organisation

Please note that these posts do not carry Postgraduate Dean’s approval or training recognition.

The applicant must have demonstrable skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking in English that enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues, as set out in the GMC’s Good Medical Practice (2013). Non-UK applicants must possess the IELTS/OET exam before obtaining a GMC licence to practice.

Applications from job seekers who require skilled worker sponsorship to work in the UK are welcome and will be considered alongside all other applications. For further information please visit the UK Visas and Immigration website.

It is a requirement for skilled worker applicants, applying for entry clearance into the UK, to present a criminal record certificate from each country they have resided continuously or cumulatively for 12 months or more in the past 10 years. Adult dependants (over 18 years old) will also be subject to this requirement.

Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is an Equal Opportunities Employer.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The John Farman Intensive Care Unit (JVF ICU) is a 32-bedded Critical Care Unit admitting over 1800 adult patients annually. The medical case mix reflects the complex nature of the patients within Addenbrooke’s: significant numbers of admissions are from hepatology, haematology, nephrology and transplant medicine. Addenbrooke’s performs around 100 liver transplants annually and is the UK’s sole multivisceral transplant centre. Patients are admitted to the JVF ICU from all major specialties excluding cardiothoracics and neurosurgery.

NCCU is a mixed level 2/3 Critical Care Unit which currently comprises 27 beds and is dedicated to the management of patients with acute brain injury and major trauma. The NCCU has an international reputation for clinical and translational research, particularly in the areas of traumatic brain injury and neuroimaging. It was the first centre in the UK recognised for specialist training in Neurointensive Care. NCCU provides critical care for adult patients in the neurosciences (neurology, neurosurgery and stroke medicine) and to the East of England Major Trauma Network.
