Job overview
Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Ophthalmologist with specialist interest in Vitreoretinal Surgery.
The appointed consultant will join a team of 22 Consultant Ophthalmologists at an exciting time of new development and investment in the Department of Ophthalmology at Addenbrooke’s Hospital.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will participate in the vitreoretinal consultant on-call rota (currently 1 in 4 rota with prospective cover). The vitreoretinal on-call rota is separate to the general on-call ophthalmology rota, which the successful candidate would not be expected to take part in.
Emergency eye care is provided in one of our Eye Clinics with support from specialist doctors, clinical fellows and residents including full support from a specialist ophthalmic nursing team.
The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the teaching activities of the department. There is a well-established regional teaching programme for specialty trainees in ophthalmology in the East of England.
The Department of Ophthalmology benefits from a hospital-wide electronic patient record (Epic). This digital system helps to improve patient care and provides opportunities for audit evaluations and research projects. Addenbrooke’s Hospital also provides outstanding facilities for research with opportunities for close collaboration between medical specialties. The Cambridge Eye Research Centre (CERC) provides the research infrastructure for ophthalmology studies within the department.

The applicant must have demonstrable skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking in English that enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues, as set out in the GMC’s Good Medical Practice (2013). Non-UK applicants must possess the IELTS/OET exam before obtaining a GMC licence to practice.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The successful candidate will help manage and develop the vitreoretinal service in collaboration with 3 fellow consultants: Mr Doug Newman, Mr Thomas Nixon and Mr Philip Alexander. There will be close collaboration with the medical retina team, and the medical ophthalmology service.
The vitreoretinal service is supported by a 3 dedicated vitreoretinal specialist nurses and provides care for our local patients as well as a regional service for more specialist management in the East of England. The vitreoretinal service deals with the full range of vitreoretinal conditions, including provision of the National Stickler Syndrome Service led by Professor Martin Snead.
