Job overview

Cambridge University Hospitals (the Trust), works in close partnership with Cambridge Enterprise (CE), the technology transfer company of the University of Cambridge to manage and exploit intellectual property developed in its National Institute of Heath Research Biomedical Research Centre (NIHR BRC).

We are seeking an experienced technology transfer manager to work in collaboration with the Trust's R&D Department and CE Technology Managers to manage a portfolio of projects and act as primary contact for BRC related IP matters.

You will manage the development and commercialisation of IP assets associated with the BRC including negotiating IP related agreements and concluding commercial deals.

You will also use business development skills to drive IP exploitation and consultancy and other commercial research activities in coordination with the Trust R&D department, the BRC and CE.

You will spend time at the Trust and at Cambridge Enterprise's offices.

Main duties of the job

You will manage a large portfolio of IP related cases and stimulate the disclosure of new cases arising from BRC or Trust research activities.

You will lead on all on-going IP management and commercialisation activities including;

  • Negotiating and concluding highly complex IP agreements (e.g. confidentiality, material transfer, licence, evaluation, option, joint invention and internal assignments).
  • Development of case commercialisation strategies.
  • Liaising with CE Business Support Team, inventors and patent agents to manage all aspects of patent prosecution.
  • Identifying potential commercial partners and suitable marketing channels for new inventions.
  • Liaising with key stakeholders including inventors, the Trust R&D, CE, University of Cambridge Research Operations Office and other sponsors, including reporting on IP related research activity to the NIHR for BRC supported work.
  • Developing and implementing Trust-wide policies and procedures relating to IP activity.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Cambridge University Hospitals (the Trust), via its National Institute of Heath Research Biomedical Research Centre (NIHR BRC), works in close partnership with Cambridge Enterprise (CE), the technology transfer company of the University of Cambridge to manage and exploit its intellectual property. This partnership has led the Trust and the University to enter into a framework agreement which sets out how they will manage joint research activity and the intellectual property that derives from it.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • A postgraduate qualification (PhD or Masters) in biomedical / life sciences
Desirable criteria
  • ICH Good Clinical Practice training (advanced level within last two years)
  • MBA / Business Administration qualification or other Post-graduate Qualification in law or health service management or significant experience in technology transfer

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant experience in an intellectual property or commercial research position in public, academia and commercial sectors
  • Significant experience in coordinating and implementing exploitation programmes or activity
  • Experience of drafting, negotiating and concluding Licensing, Service or Consultancy Agreements, Research and Collaboration Agreements, Confidential Agreements and other IP related Agreements
  • Significant experience in business development, technology transfer, project management or establishing and managing collaborative translational research
  • Significant experience of managing a large, varied caseload of research projects and related IP in a healthcare, university or bioscience research focused commercial environment (not necessarily in house)
  • Significant experience of commercial, research and/or intellectual property contracting. Including detailed clause interpretation and negotiating complex commercial, R&D and IP related agreements and business dealings with the public, private and third sectors
  • Significant experience of translating and developing IP arising from research to support the research goals of the R&D Department and the organisation
  • Significant experience of drafting Licensing, Service or Consultancy Agreements, Research and Collaboration Agreements, Confidentiality Agreements and other IP related Agreements
  • Evidence of working in an environment of rapid change
  • Evidence of delivering successful complex negotiations with the public and private sector bodies

Knowledge
