Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a qualified obstetric sonographer to join our team in the Rosie Ultrasound Department. You will be enthusiastic, highly motivated and willing to teach.  We work closely with the Fetal Medicine department and the Early Pregnancy Unit.

PLEASE NOTE THIS POSITION IS ONLY OPEN TO QUALIFIED SONOGRAPHERS.

Main duties of the job

To participate in the delivery of a high-quality responsive ultrasound service, managing an unpredictable workload according to department needs for the Trust.

To be responsible for carrying out early pregnancy and / or obstetric ultrasound scans to include dating / NT measurement, fetal anomaly screening and third trimester. The post will include some weekend work to cover the early pregnancy assessment service.

To join a multidisciplinary team participating in service delivery, teaching, research, audit and management activities as required.

To independently undertake ultrasound examinations, communicating the results to patients and other staff. Make appropriate clinical decisions about further actions or referrals in accordance with local and National guidelines.

To provide high quality training to relevant staff in all aspects of obstetric and early pregnancy scanning.

To maintain a high level of professionalism and act as a source of expertise to other members of the multidisciplinary team.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Postgraduate Diploma/ Certificate in Obstetric Ultrasound or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Further relevant study
  • NT accreditation

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Relevant skills, knowledge and experience in the full range of ultrasound examinations including Doppler with competent reporting skills in all trimesters of pregnancy
  • Currently working as a sonographer in obstetrics and be willing to scan for a minimum of 2 days per week in order to maintain skills
  • Able to deliver bad news to patients in an appropriate/empathetic manner.
Desirable criteria
  • Postgraduate experience
  • Experience of Fetal Doppler assessment
  • Evidence of attendance on a counselling / breaking bad news course

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Awareness of current safety requirements; NSC, FASP, NICE, SBL and other relevant national guidelines
  • Must show evidence of CPD in ultrasound and ensure their practice is evidence based.
Desirable criteria
  • Keen to support the Maternity Services Strategy, with particular regard to the quality of the patient journey

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Excellent communication skills: written/oral/non-verbal
  • Good organisational skills
  • Receptive to change.
  • Able to work as part of a small team in a high pressured and emotive environment.
  • Independent reporting of scan findings.
  • Able to work under own initiative.
  • IT experience. Competent in using the EPIC electronic patient record and Astraia scan reporting database.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of Excel / Word / PowerPoint
  • Ability to mentor a student
  • Ability to interpret statistics and utilise knowledge to help advise women regarding antenatal screening and diagnosis of fetal abnormalities

Additonal Requirements

Essential criteria
  • To undertake practical competency assessment as required.
  • Prepared to work contracted hours flexibly, including the weekend on call rota for the early pregnancy unit and other weekend scan lists as required.
  • The ability to understand and behave at all times, towards patients, visitors and colleagues according to the Trust values of safe, kind, excellent.
  • Able to scan for duration of full list/session
  • Able to transfer patients following manual handling training
  • Demonstrable experience of audit.
