Job overview

The community inpatients service is based across four hospital locations in Cambridgeshire: Brookfields Hospital in Cambridge, Princess of Wales in Ely,  North Cambridgeshire Hospital in Wisbech and ICU based at City Care Centre, Peterborough. These four units provide rehabilitation to patients after prolonged periods of care in acute hospitals or whilst recovering from physical injuries.

The multidisciplinary rehabilitation team delivers programmes of care to help people recover from their injuries, whilst helping them prepare to return to normal living, or make a smooth transition to long term, palliative or residential care.

This vacancy will be based at Cambridge Rehab Unit, Brookfields Hospital

Main duties of the job

The Housekeeping Assistant’s role is to assist the ward team to provide a high standard of care to the patient, through maintaining a clean, tidy and safe environment and providing for patients’ eating and drinking needs. 

The postholder will:

  • Order diets using patients care plan
  • Prepare vacant beds for new arrivals
  • Clean and tidy patients lockers & tables.
  • Assist in removing used clinical waste bags according to infection control policy.

  •  Prepare patients and their environment for meals
  • Moving & Handling of electric ovens
  •  Assist with serving meals and drinks.
  •  Clean and make good patient dining areas after mealtimes.
  •  Observing patients and reporting changes to professional staff.
  •  Maintain a hygienic and safe kitchen environment.
  • Carry out general light cleaning duties as necessary to maintain a high standard of hygiene, comfort, and safety.
  • Report equipment faults and defects.
  • To attend all relevant mandatory training as and when required to do so.
  • To comply with all relevant Trust policies, procedures, and guidelines, including those relating to Equal Opportunities, Health and Safety and Confidentiality of Information and to be aware of any changes in these
  • To be aware of the responsibility of all employees to maintain a safe and healthy environment for patients/ clients, visitors, and staff.

Education / Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Basic understanding of food handling and hygiene.
Desirable criteria
  • Food handling and hygiene course.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working in a customer facing role
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in a ward environment
  • Experience of basic food preparation and serving

Skills & Abilties

Essential criteria
  • Willingness to use computer with relevant training.
  • Ability to work flexibly as part of a team
  • Basic knowledge of balanced nutrition and hydration
Desirable criteria
  • Basic knowledge of infection control
  • Understanding the principle of patient care
  • Knowledge of special diets
