Specialist Home Enteral Feeding and Nutrition Support Dietitian

Job overview
• To deliver a specialist Home Enteral Feeding (HEF) role in the Nutrition and Dietetic Service in Cambridgeshire & Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust (CPFT).
• To work as a dietetic practitioner within uni-professional and multi-professional team environments with regular supervision
• To assess and treat a case load of patients in line with the Model and Process for Dietetic Consultations and maintain associated records.
• Deliver a high standard of dietetic care.
• To deliver education and training sessions related to HEF and Nutrition Support.
• To supervise or monitor the work of assistants, students or other dietetic staff.
• To be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of your own work and workload.
Main duties of the job
To provide a specialist dietetic service in the community to a wide variety of complex adult clients with feeding tubes, including advice on tube care, administration of feeds and ordering.
To nutritionally diagnose, give appropriate advice and formulate treatment plans when consulting with patients, relatives and carers, taking into account factors such as the clients presenting condition, past medical history, social considerations and medication.
To act as a point of reference for dietetic colleagues and other health professionals with respect to nutrition and HEF, giving advice, training, and supporting their clinical practice.
To support the department's Preceptorship and student training programme, when appropriate.
To participate in regular supervision in accordance with good practice guidelines and Trust policy.
Protection of Children & Vulnerable Adults – To promote and safeguard the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults.
To comply with the Professional Codes of Conduct and to be aware of changes in these. To maintain up to date knowledge of all relevant legislation and local policies and procedures implementing this.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Please note for this role you will be required to travel independently around the county meeting strict time deadlines. You will need to hold a full UK driving licence* and have use of a vehicle. You cannot use public transport for this role as this is not a reliable form of transport and will not allow you to meet service needs. - To provide a specialist dietetic service in the community to a wide variety of complex adult clients with feeding tubes, including advice on tube care, administration of feeds and ordering.
- To nutritionally diagnose, give appropriate advice and formulate treatment plans when consulting with patients, relatives and carers, taking into account factors such as the clients presenting condition, past medical history, social considerations and medication.
- To maintain accurate records of all patient consultations and related work carried out at each clinical session, including computerised data collection.
- To undertake systematic literature reviews and critically appraise the evidence identified and identify implications for practice.
- To ensure evidence based, auditable dietetic standards and protocols are in place, developing and updating as necessary.
- To develop and update written resources, for example diet sheets and patient advice leaflets.
- To work on projects dealing with new ways of working in nutrition and HEF, taking into account national and local initiatives, identifying areas for improvement and development.
- To act as a point of reference for dietetic colleagues and other health professionals with respect to nutrition and HEF, giving advice, training, and supporting their clinical practice.
- To liaise with other health professionals and managers on issues regarding service development and the clinical management of patients.
- To prepare and give presentations, adapting complex information to a wide range of audiences.
- Liaise with members of the MDT to provide coordinated care.
- To actively manage the risk and benefits of their interventions within the context of the MDT care.
- To manage complex ethical issues, dilemmas and conflicts and support others to manage these areas.
- To actively contribute to specialist groups and multi-professional networks.
- To work within the dietetic departmental clinical standards and evidence based practice, and within professional boundaries.
- To support the department's Preceptorship and student training programme, when appropriate.
- To participate in the Nutrition and Dietetic Service specific emergency preparedness process.
- To attend and lead relevant business and education meetings, as required.
- To adhere to Nutrition and Dietetic Service Document " What a Good Service Looks like"
- To assist with the development of the department competency framework and complete competencies relevant to this post.
- To be peer reviewed at least twice per year. At least one must be undertaken in a clinical setting and be conducted by an experienced dietitian within your specialist area. The second can be undertaken in other areas such as staff training or group education.
- To peer review other dietitians or assistants/ technicians as requested.
- To work within available staff resources, where necessary looking at new ways of working, to improve efficiency and achieve 18 week wait targets

Education and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Qualification in dietetics recognised by the HCPC for registration as a dietitian working in the UK.
- Strong CPD evidence in portfolio for ongoing maintenance of competencies.
Desirable criteria
- Clinical supervision training
- Student training course
Experience
Essential criteria
- Relevant post registration experience
- HEF/Nutrition support specific experience including management of long term conditions
- Multidisciplinary team working
- Understanding of the nature of community care in the NHS
Desirable criteria
- Experience of research and audit
- Previous experience in mentoring and clinical supervision of dietetic colleagues
- Active participation in student training in previous post(s)
- Working with clinical units/GP partners, including Local Commissioning Groups, Medicines Management, CCG.
