Job overview

This post is for a Research Assistant to be part of the psychology team in the The Darwin Centre for Young People.

The Darwin Centre for Young People is a Tier 4 adolescent inpatient unit based in Cambridge. The unit offers assessment and treatment to young people, aged 13-18 years old, experiencing psychiatric, emotional or psychological problems that interfere with their social, interpersonal and educational functioning.

Main duties of the job

The main duties of the post are to collect, collate and support the analysis of outcome data under direct supervision of the teams’ clinical psychologists, working independently according to a plan agreed with the qualified psychologists and within the overall framework of the teams’ policies and procedures.

Additionally, this role will also involve assistance in clinically related administration, assessment, conduct of audits, collection of statistics and development of audit and/or research projects, teaching and project work.

The ideal candidate would demonstrate excellent communication and relationship building skills, have experience of quantitative and qualitative research methods and evaluation methodologies, and have an ability to work flexibly and autonomously. This job requires a mix of skills and behaviours both academic (e.g. academic training; knowledge of the evidence base on demographic and clinical factors regarding mental health) and inter-personal, particularly with regards to engagement (e.g. ability to engage with a diverse population; ability to communicate with non-researchers).

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  1. To complete protocol-based data collection procedures with parents/ patients/referrers, to administer/collect self-report measures, rating scales, psychometric assessments, direct and indirect structured observations and semi-structured interviews with clients, family members and others involved in the patients care. To then support the analysis and reporting of this information.
  2. To maintain project databases and filing systems, in accordance with GDPR and ethics approvals. 
  3. To assist in data analysis, write-up and dissemination of data. 
  4. To prepare the annual and quarterly reports which summarise all the collected data, under the supervision of the teams clinical psychologist. To work with other staff to assess and review the care of the young people and their carers in preparation for multi-disciplinary reviews.
  5. To assist in the development of a psychologically based framework of understanding and care to the benefit of all clients of the service, across all settings where care takes place.
  6. To attend and contribute to appropriate multi-disciplinary meetings.

Person specification

Education / Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Upper second class honours degree or higher in psychology
  • Entitlement to graduate membership of the British Psychological Society
Desirable criteria
  • Further post-graduate training in relevant areas of professional psychology, mental health practice and/or research design and analysis

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working with adolescents
  • Experience of working with young people and families who have mental health difficulties.
  • Experience of research and/or service evaluation within mental health related area (i.e. academic or clinical setting)
  • Experience of working with families experiencing psychological distress
  • Experience in use of research methods and evaluation methodologies including audit and data collection
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in an NHS mental health setting.
  • Experience of assisting in the production of audits or service evaluation projects.
  • Experience of report writing.
  • Experience of supporting the collation of data as part of routine service delivery.
  • Previous experience of working as research assistant or equivalent

Knowledge & Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to plan and prioritise workload
  • Understanding of needs and difficulties of children and young people with mental health challenges
  • High level communication skills (written and verbal) including an ability to communicate and work in settings in which the atmosphere may be highly emotive
  • The ability to maintain a high degree of ethical and professional standards
Desirable criteria
  • Skills in areas of audit and/or research
  • Understanding of statistics
  • Ability to work independently
