Job overview
his is an exciting opportunity to join the NHS Urgent and Emergency Care Department, where no two days are the same.
You will be the first point of contact for patients and relatives arriving in what can often be a stressful and vulnerable time. Your role will be essential in creating a calm, supportive and professional environment, ensuring every patient receives a positive experience from the moment they arrive.
We are looking for someone who is organised, approachable and able to work efficiently under pressure, while maintaining high standards of accuracy and care.
Priority will be given to colleagues identified as at risk through the Trust’s redeployment process.
Please note that interviews will be held face to face.
Main duties of the job
- Greet patients and relatives, acting as the first point of contact in the Emergency Department
- Register patients accurately and efficiently on Trust IT systems
- Update patient demographics and records
- Answer telephone enquiries in a professional and timely manner
- Book clinic appointments and ambulance arrivals
- Support patients and relatives with enquiries and signposting
- Maintain patient records, including scanning, filing and documentation management
- Ensure discharge summaries are completed in a timely manner
- Maintain a clean, organised and welcoming reception area
- Assist with induction and training of new team members
- Complete mandatory training as required

Education and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Numerate and literate, with Maths and English to GCSE
Desirable criteria
- IT qualification
- NVQ level 2/3
Experience
Essential criteria
- Comprehensive working knowledge of Microsoft Office, especially Outlook
- Customer service experience
Desirable criteria
- Previous experience in an acute or emergency health care clerical environment
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Good organisational and communication skills
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft office
- Proven customer service skills
Key Skills
Essential criteria
- Good written and verbal communication skills sufficient to be able to effectively communicate with patients, the multi-disciplinary team and external agencies

The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
